Going number 2. Why am I having so much trouble?

Since most of my lights are off most of the time, I never had any expectations of saving money with a more efficient bulb. I have purchased a couple of each new bulb design when they were on sale, and put them in fixtures that I use regularly. The 10 year Cree bulb, approved for use under ceiling fans, has a real life of about one year - same as the old incandescent bulbs. I suppose it can be a good deal if you keep returning the dead ones for replacement!
In general the FLUORESCENT bulbs are the CLEAR WINNER for amount of light and length of time in use. I have one four foot fixture in the basement on 24/7, and one fixture upstairs on about 18 hours a day (plant light), that probably provide 50% of my light usage with no fuss. I use daylight balanced bulbs and life is bright - at a very reasonable cost.

About a year ago I changed all the incandescent and CFL light bulbs in my house and replaced them with LED lights. You know, the ones that are supposed to last just short of forever? A month ago, the first one failed and now, a second one (number 2), is cutting off and on and getting ready to crap out (no pun intended). This was the same behavior exhibited by the first one that failed so I expect it will go at any time. To be sure, I like the light from the bulbs and the power savings they give, but really. The old burn-the-wire-to-make-light bulbs lasted as long as ten years at my place so I'm not impressed with the longevity of the new ones. One, okay maybe I can see that, but two? In a year? Hrmph.

By the way, does anyone else remember when the local utility company, Detroit Edison in my case, used to replace burned out bulbs with new ones on a one-to-one basis? Thomas Edison call your office.

I started buying LEDs when Home Depot dropped the price from 8.99 to 4.99. I would buy just a couple at a time and started replacing the incandescent bulbs slowly. There are about 70 built-in light fixtures in the house not to mention the free standing lamps. The stated life was 23 years (based on 3 hour a day usage). Since at our house that is not the case, I expected the light to last somewhere between 5 to 7 years. Since then I have purchased bulbs for as little as 50 cents! Sam's club was selling a 6 pack of GE 60 watt (equivalent) bulbs for 2.81. It seems the package info was incorrect since they came out with a new package of the 60 watt GE stick light that shows 10 watt consumption rather than 9 that showed on the older packs. I bought 10 packs (the max. they would sell to one person) went back and picked up another six a few days later. One day I noticed one of the first lights had gone out. I didn't know when it was installed but I had been on that program of replacing lights for only about a year. Then two more failed. I estimated three had failed in a nine to sixteen month range. At that point I began writing the date of install in heavy black permanent marker (Sharpie) on the base of the lamp. After three more of the original batch failed I wrote to Cree suggesting they replace them for me free of charge. I never heard from anyone at Cree. Needless to say, I will never buy another Cree product. Someone said Cree invented the LED light. Too bad if that is so because they don't do business well. In addition to the Sam's buys Home Depot has had some good close outs where I was able to buy Phillips bulbs for less than 2.00 including some 75 watt size. It is doubtful I will ever have to buy another 60 watt equiv. bulb since I have over a hundred in reserve now. The GE and Phillips bulbs are holding up well though. Over two years now since the Phillips and GEs were installed and no failures yet. Can't wait until those 100 watt bulbs become more affordable.

I have replaced all the bulbs in my home with LEDs, except for one ceiling fan in the master bedroom which will not accept leds, guest bathroom, master bedroom closet and dining room and kitchen which has two 4 foot fluroscent light fixtures. These will eventually get replaced with LEDs. So far I have not had to replace any of my Leds and the longest one I have is a two year old 4 foot shop light I bought at Costco.

That sounds good to me as I put two of those shop lights in my living room a few months ago. (hidden in a soffit shining up toward the ceiling) My bulbs I got from Batteries Plus. No where near as cheap as Wallyworld but much better quality.

How many flies does it take to screw in a light bulb?

2, but no one knows how they get inside the light bulb.
