Chimping becomes part of the norm when attemtping to capture fast action shots such as birds doing their thing. You never know how successful you were getting the split second movements until you review them in the LCD screen.

GUYS!! So much misunderstanding here. There is chimp and THERE IS chip! Not a damaged lens, but a lens that has an auto focus confirmation CHIP. That's a contact included with or added to a manual focus lens that causes the little green focus confirmation light to come on (and go beep). Very useful with large apertures (f:1.4, f:1.8) and paper thin depth of field. Hint: they're called "chipped" lenses and "un-chipped" lenses.

I am guessing the word is clipping. Did I get it right? Did I win?

"Chipping" is when the golfer's ball is just off the edge of the green and they use a short stroke, usually with a lofted club in an effort to softly land the ball on the green as near the hole as possible....

Oh, wait! You probably mean "chimping"! See previous answers.

Welcome to UHH... hope you brought your sense of humor!

Nothing wrong with chimping. I use it more to check histogram.

This is an urban myth! It comes from CHecking the IMage Preview!

No, chipping is when you bump against something and a piece falls off.
At our ages it happens quite a bit!!! LoL

There's nothing wrong with chimping as long as you don't go "UUUUUh UUUUUh UUUUUh, Awwwwwwh Awwwwwwh Awwwwwwh," and then - "look look look" and turn the back of your camera toward your fellow photographer buddy. That is the true definition of chimping.

But looking at the back of your own camera to see that you have exposure correct, sharp, composed, etc. is ok. Just don't be bothering other photographers with your excitement and enthusiasm.

I leave my LCD turned off. If I have to look, I just hit the button.

+1. I don't like the screen lighting up when I'm looking through the viewfinder. And the battery point is also valid.

As to when do I hit the button and check results? Whenever I want to!

If you shoot film you don't have to worry about it

I usually shoot a few frames before peeking or chimping...on every shot it would be kind of annoying especially if you are shooting 10 fps. :)

I do this to confirm focus or effect - usually exposure is in the ballpark so I am more concerned with composition, focus and effect (e.g., motion blur).

There is at least one "chimp proof" camera - Leica makes a rangefinder with no LCD screen so it behaves like it's classic film counterpart. Cool in a way but it's really crazy IMO and NOT cheap either, of course, being a LEICA.
