D200 ---64 GB Memory card not working

I put a new Lexar 64GB CF memory card in my D200, formatted it, and it registers as "FULL" in the control panel. The shutter release button will not actuate and it also flashes an "r00" message in the counter on the control panel. The camera still works with my older Sandisk 16GB cards but not the new larger cards. Is it possible that the new cards are just not compatable with the camera? The cards work fine in my D810 but not int he older D200. Any ideas or suggestions about what is going on? Thanks

Does your user's manual recommend this card?

I sold my D200 years ago, but my GUESS would be that the D200 is not capable of working with such a large card. For more information, and to be sure, I'd contact Nikon Technical Support or check on their site. Best of luck.

I have a similar problem with a 64GB card in my D800E. I say "similar" because it seems to point to an interface problem with the cards and not with our cameras. In my situation, I can shoot with the 64GB card, but my card reader won't recognize it for download. If I use the 64GB card, I have to download from the camera. What our combined problems seems to be suggesting is that your "old" camera and my "old" card reader can't keep up with the "new" storage devices. I think we have to bite the bullet and either quit using the old gear or buy 32GB cards.

If the 32GB card work then you should get some of them as they are still available. Cards smaller than 8GB is difficult to find now.

Buying a new, much faster, card reader will not be quite as expensive as a new camera. Might be time for a small investment. Technology marches on! Best of luck.

Faster card may not work. Some old cameras won't work with very fast cards.

Yes, too big card for this camera. You must find an older 2,4,8 or 16 GB card. They should all work.

Call the card vendor and discuss with them. If answer is not satisfactory, call Nikon.

SanDisk and Lexar are recommended. The largest size is 8GB according to the manual.

Technology changes as time goes by. In the days of the D200, there were no cards made to store 64Gb, so the design of the camera did not accommodate them.

Yeah, you'd have to go all the way to Amazon.

How is the card formatted?

Older cards are formatted to use FAT32 and a max file size of 4 gb, but the new cards use exFAT which can record files of unlimited size, but may not be readable by older devices. You may want to try creating smaller partitions on the card formatted as FAT32., but I am not sure how the camera will deal with them.

Now you've landed on the crux of the problem: I'll buy a new camera, but I'm too damn tight to spend $50 for a new card reader. My mother used to call it "penny wise but pound foolish."
