Belted Kingfisher In Tree At Local Pond

I am amazed when I watch these little birds catch small minnows out of the local pond. They hover like a hummingbird, then dive straight for the minnow. Then they go back to the a tree branch, kill the fish, using their beak like a fish-whacker by striking it on a sturdy branch.

SX 50 camera was used to capture this male Kingfisher shot.

Super! My first summer with an sx50 I was standing beside a pond photographing dragonflies when a kingfisher "came out of nowhere" and caught a fish, which it proceeded to smack around just as you describe...only 20 feet from me. I've never come close to such an awesome photo op of these charmers since then.

Thanks for the comment Linda. These birds are sure interesting to watch. I have had my eye on this one for about 3 weeks now. Glad you got to experience the fish-whacker method employed by a Kingfisher.

Nice shot. I find these birds to be quite difficult to photograph as they are very shy.

Nice capture! I looked at the EXIF data on the download and noticed this image was using digital zoom. Images from these SX50s really impress when taken by people that know what they're doing. Thanks for sharing.
