Will need to buy FX lens when getting Nikon D800? Can the DX lens be used with the D800? I understand the corners would be darker because of the full frame sensor!

To take full advantage of the 36MP image, you need FX lenses. A DX lens will work but the camera will go into "FX" mode, making a smaller image.

This will be covered in the manual, as well as on the Nikon website - http://www.nikonusa.com

Using a DX lens on the D800 gives you a 15mp image. Almost exactly the same as the D7000, which is no slouch.

I think it was MTShooter who said that a DX lens on an FX body will not produce an image that will fill the sensor. You would get a round, telescope-type of image. But I might be wrong; it happened once before.

The camera (D800) knows when a DX lens is mounted and automatically goes into crop mode.

Is that a universal thing with DX cameras?

Actually I believe the D800's have a DX mode that conforms to the APS-C (DX) lens footprint.

Not needed with a DX camera.

I think all FX nikons do it. Never tried a DX lens on the D700.

I'd wait for the new D600 FX to come out first. I hear it will sell for $1600. That will leave some cash left to buy some FX glass.

I'm waiting for the D7100. It will be interesting to see the specs on the D600, since it will have a low price for an FX.

It's the incredible ISO that you can shoot at, without noise that gets me on the FX cameras!

I have the D3 and just bought the D800 - both work fine with a DX lens, at least the 10.5 fisheye
