If you are moving from an old MBP to a new IMac with the Retina display get the 27 inch display. But do get help at the Apple Store in setting up. I would suggest you make an appointment at the store to purchase your IMac and take your MBP with you. They will help with setup and will move your files to the new IMac. I didn't and had issues with the text size. It will normally be very sharp and much smaller than you are used to. They can and will help. If you can afford it, SSD is great. I have the 3T hybrid HD which is working well for me. My IMac has the upgraded processor, 16 MB memory and maxed out graphics option. It is great to use.

Good luck with your purchase.

16 mb memory is not enough to make your Mac faster. You meant 16 GB memory, didn't you?

Hey Joe,

Apple has a feature named "Migration" that will do this for you. Since you are asking for advice I will recommend concentrating on your iMac and worry about tablets later. Don't use your computer's HD for photographs, external HDs are inexpensive enough to use in multiples. WD offers an 8 TB version for about $200.00. The portability of externals is too valuable, and WHEN they fail they art easy to replace. The migration feature is neither complicated nor technical. Set it up and turn it loose, it takes a while but will move "everything" from one to the other. Don't waste your money asking Apple to do it, they will gladly take your dollars but that will be unnecessary. Good luck to you and your new iMac, wear it in health! Have lots of fun with it.

And if I were purchasing a $200 8TB drive, I would certainly purchase in multiples - I'd buy 2 and set them up to mirror (RAID 1). Your data is too valuable to lose, and frankly, $200 is not enough $ to make an enterprise quality 8TB drive.

I have the 2010 iMac without Retina and love it. Get the biggest SSD internal drive you can afford, as this limits the risk of spinning platters eventually failing.

My next one will be SSD and at least 16 GB of memory.

Agree with the above comments on external drives to store things and they're now making external SSDs.

Best of luck. It will be great and the 27" screen seals the deal for you.

Since you are using external hard drives with the MBP, you can just keep using them with the iMAC, and then you can still use the MBP if you want.

Regarding the RAM get as much as you can. Buying a fast CPU and skimping out on RAM is like buying a 400 HP SUV with a 10 gallon gas tank.

FYI that new iMac that was just introduced, is a very nice computer!

I just ordered the new one. They've upped the color depth on the display, which had been holding me back, and made better graphics available.

Only thing that pissed me off was the price of memory--that and the fact that while they provide instructions for installing memory yourself--and it's very simple-- you have to go elsewhere to be informed that doing so will void the warranty.

Anyway, I got tired of messing with Windows, and I'm very fond of my MBP for road trips, once i got the hang of the OS.

Also with the new USB-C external drives I would get an external RAID device. It should be almost as fast as an internal HD (or SSD) and it will keep all your images in one place incase your internal HD/SSD fails.
