Lenses - Which to Buy

I have a Canon 7D EOS and a Sony a65 with the lenses that came with them plus the lower end macro and zoom lenses. I have been told by a couple of pros that it is time to invest in nicer lenses. I don't know where to start. Does anyone have advice? Also, does anyone have these cameras with original lenses and higher end lenses that could post comparison pictures so I could see the significance of the needed upgrade (the difference in the shots - how a better lens makes a difference)? Thanks.

There could be several ways.
I would update the most common lens used, first.
Then the next, most common. And so on.
Probably a lot of thoughts on this subject......
Good Luck!!
Oh, welcome to the forum!!

Most commonly used lenses are my all purposes lenses (28-135), followed by zoom (75-300 or 100-300), and lately I have started playing with my macro lens. My sony is my work horse. I have had a little trouble with the learning curve on the 7D but I am getting there...I bought the Dummies Book. :-) And I have been lurking in here getting lots of tips.

Like a stereo set, the sound is only as good as its weakest link... Bad speakers - bad sound... Bad receiver - bad sound...

Same thing holds true .... Good camera with mediocre lens = not so good pictures...Good camera with good quality lens = good pictures...

This may be stupid but what is the definition of a "good" lens?

Cameras come and go, but lenses are forever. As everyone will tell you, invest in good lenses. For Canon, that would mean L lenses. I shoot with Nikon, and I have gotten several lenses from ebay or dealers refurbished. They might just as well be brand new. Something to consider.

As for comparing images, that would be tough. A better lens would be faster, with larger lens openings, and that counts for a lot. It would be put together better, probably work smoother, and last longer. Of course, the glass would be better.

If you're familiar with digitalrevtv.com, you might recall that Kai did a comparison of good lenses with top and lower end cameras. The lenses made better images, not the cameras. I looked but couldn't find it.

Digitalrevtv.com is set in Hong Kong, and the star of the show is a young guy named Kai. It's humorous and often with a bit of off-color humor, but it is interesting.

I would pick only one system and stick with it, Canon, Sony, Nikon, Pentax...whatever.
That way, you're not wishing you had a Canon lens for your Sony and the menu system is similar. Ditto what was said about the lenses.. the good ones will outlast the bodies.

Do y'all have an opinion as to which is the better camera - the Sony a65 or the Canon 7D?

Nikon D7000 ... or wait for the full frame D600 that's rumored to be 24 megapixels $1500. But that's just my opinion.
Seriously, there is a website called Snapsort you can compare both your cameras and others. Can't give you the link, I'm on an iPad and don't know how to copy & paste with it.
