Just import the photos into LR. You only need to point LR to their folder(s).

In LR:
1. Select Library (upper right of window)
2. Select "Import (lower left) - A directory structure will be displayed.
3. Browse to the folder containing your photos - thumbnails will be displayed
4. Check the ones you want to import, uncheck the one's you don't.
5. Select Import again (lower left.)

Note: This is for LR3. I can't say of it has changed for LR4

Thank you snowbear for your response. I tried what you suggested and it appeared to download the file but then I got the message "no photos," or something like that. I'm ready to throw my computer out the window!

The other thing you can try is this:
1. Start LR.
2. Start Finder and go to one of your photo folders
3. Select one or more images, drag and drop it into the main LR window. This should give you the "import" selections (#3 from my first response) for all of the images in that particular folder.

I made a big mistake when I first started using LR and had the same thing happen repeately. I suggest reading Scott Kelby's book on LR and one of the first things he states and most importantly is to first, create a file where all of your LR photos will be stored. You might call it MY LIGHTROOM PHOTOS, and then within that file you can create any number of subfiles, but it is the most important first step, other wise per my experience and others LR can have difficulty finding where your images are stored.

I made a big mistake when I first started using LR... (show quote)

Even after you do that, which I recommend, you must NOT MOVE your photos because LR will not find them. That's how it is. Make sure you know where you want your photos, a simple, one place stop like you said like a big sized Folder (Pictures) and subfolders by date, subject, place, whichever you prefer and makes sense for you.
