Hello there - hoping some of you will be able to help an enthusiastic amateur.

Have just received my set of Polaroid AF extension tubes.
I am uable to buy a dedicated macro lens at the moment. Have spent a day playing and have got some very pleasing results with the 13mm, however, when I try using the other two, either in isolation or combined, then camera is unable to nail the focus and is continually searching.

I have a canon 550d and my lenses are Canon 18-55 and 55- 250 (kit) and the "nifty fifty". As you will guess from my lenses I am a relative newbie to DSLR!

PS have tried using tripod.

Try manual focusing and if that doesn't work move the camera away from the subject with the additional extension tubes might be too close to focus even the manual mode will not help if this is the case.

Yes, have been trying all morning and have tried what you have suggested and it does work - thank you. Just another query though, my photos have very little depth of field, would a dedicated macro lens have more? Hoever, even with narrow dof, am having lots of fun!!

Due to how close you are to the subject you dont get a lot of depth of field. I have a nikor 105mm macro and dont get a large depth of field. Since you are on a tripod might want to set aperture to f16 or higher this should get the best depth of field though will reduce shutter speed

Like you, I started with extension tubes, the cheap $10 kind - totally manual. As you're found, focusing manually works best. As for the depth of field, there is a lot of math and theory involved, and some people might jump in with that. Basically, yes, there is a very shallow depth of field. The closer you get to your macro subject, the less DOF you will have. I got a Nikon 105mm macro after playing with the extension tubes. I still use manual focus and exposure, and there is still a shallow DOF.

Great pictures, but I hope those things don't live near you.

The name fits the appearance. That's why my wife will never live "below the bug line." We spent lots of time in the south, and she doesn't like making new friends with six legged creatures.
