Yesterday while out and about above Co Springs setting up to get panorama shoot of Pikes Peak, camera goes DOA with a ERR. Took the batts out set it to side and used my d-500 to take the pictures. When I got back to
house ck'ed batteries one in grip dead, put a charged one in and nothing camera wouldn't turn on, took BG off and the camera came on. So I ordered a new Nikon BG, I rather spend $350 for Nikon than buy another $80 one that might short my $2000 d750 out next time. and to answer the ? for which brand it was a VELLO. First off, glad to hear your camera wasn't damaged. I've been using aftermarket grips on my Nikons (starting with a D5000 then D7000 and now D7200). Mine have also been Vello and never had a problem but that's not to say it couldn't happen some day. Obviously buying the Nikon grip should give you better piece of mind but like any mechanical or electrical device, bad things can and will happen.
Some folks tell me just to carry a spare battery in my camera bag- lighter to carry, fewer issues, and one less thing to go wrong. Maybe not the most elegant solution but it does make sense.

I have one BG on a Canon. It came with it but I would not buy another. I agree on keeping and extra one with you. If you keep your batteries charge up and you can usually shoot a day with out running your battery down unless you are using your flash I have found.

I carry extra batteries I've had BG's on all my cameras and this one was the only failure. When it happened I just put my 80-400d on and figured the lens caused the problem that why I just put the d750 away and got the d500 and the lens worked find on it, so I finished shooting with the d500

Since Nikon is having a sale of the D750 with free battery grip you may be able to buy it off someone who doesn't want the grip relatively inexpensive. For example if one buy the D750 new now for $1496 with the grip and sell the grip to you for $100 he got the D750 for $1396 which could be less expensive than a refurbished.

Third party party grips suck. Check the user comments on Amazon for Vello, and you know why Nikon charges $350.

The main appeal of a grip for me (although I no longer use one) is the button placement for portrait mode. I'd like to see camera manufacturers put a second button in a spot that would make shooting in portrait mode more convenient.

I have a Vello grip for my D7100 and a Nikon one for my D500. By feel and looks, I can not tell the difference between the Vello or Nikon. They both function great. I actually like how the Vello goes on better then the Nikon (the tightening wheel is larger). I am sure either could fail so I don't think one experience should discount the Vello brand. The problems I have heard with it is how it mounts on a tripod as compared to the Nikon. Thus far that has been fine for me. If I was a Pro, no doubt I would get the Nikon, but as an enthusiast, the Vello is pretty good (IMHO).

I checked the specs and comments when looking for a grip for my D810. Rather than buy an off-brand I bought a Nikon unit which was used. Very happy!
