Canon 7D not saving images as indicated

I did a shoot this weekend and for some reason the pics were saved only as jpeg, not the raw+jpeg that I had things set for.

The possible error may have happened when I was shooting video and snapping stills along the way.

I got home and downloaded everything to find that only jpegs were saved.

When I got home and found the files were all jpeg only I tried shooting some frames (and I could see the setting was for Raw + jpeg) and it was only saving in jpeg. Then I connected to my laptop to see if that would make a difference. Everything was working. after that the camera was behaving normally.

Any similar experiences? Im baffled, but def not going to use the video when doing anything important.

Will also take the laptop along on assignments so I can check on the spot.

Have you looked via computer hookup to verify whether the RAW files are on the card? Is the card a Compact Flash or an SD? Do you have another camera or a friend with a camera who could test the card? Do you have another memory card you could test in your camera? You can see where this is headed - I'm thinking it may be a card problem, possibly either damaged or 'failed'. Contact Canon first thing tomorrow. Be prepared to contact the manufacturer of the memory card.

Yes. that's how I learned they were missing. Now today the camera worked fine.

I'm just guessing. But I would replace the flash card.

Interesting test results. When I use the
canon eos utility the CR files appear. When I open the DCIM folder using windows file explorer they aren't. Who knows?

Canon's utility, DPP is written to work with CanonRaw files. "Who knows?" That is a euphemism for "windows." Smart money goes with DPP.

The windows 7 raw CR2 codec apparently does not work correctly in Windows 10. There are some workarounds such as running in compatibility mode or using the Microsoft viewer (which receives very low marks), but the best solutions are:

Use Canon's Digital Photo Professional (DPP) 4.5
Use Fastone viewer
Use Adobe's DNG converter
Use Adobe's ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) or Bridge

The first 3 solutions are free...

$10 FastPictureViewer Codec (http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/) works great....

It allows you to view almost any kind of RAW file, as well as a number of other types of files that Windows won't usually display. You can view thumbnails in Explorer or open the image larger in Windows Media Center or Windows Photo Viewer (not sure if it's changed in Win 10, but in older version of the OS, Explorer and Photo Viewer are not color calibrated, so RAW files won't show true colors... but are fine for basic stuff like checking focus, composition, etc.)

I see the latest version of the Codec also includes a plug-in for Photoshop, which will allow newer cameras RAW files to be viewed in older versions of PS that don't officially "support" them.

I've been using the FastPictureViewer codec on three computers for a number of years. Well worth the small cost since it works with so many different RAW files.

Thanks for the great tips. Will see if these fixes solve the issue. Happy shooting! Jeff
