Hi,
Would a lens tele converter 2x would help me to get more zoom to get better pictures of things that are far away? Only have efs 18-55 mm and 75-300mm for my canon eos rebel xs
Thanks. Mary.
In effect it would double the zoom length of any lens you use it with. You will lose at lens one apeature setting as you arer putting more glass in front of the camera which for at least some shoots in may not matter. I would suggest that you go with a name brand and if your camera brand makes one go with that. Remember your weakest link will show the quality of the finished photo. Good luck & enjoy the day.
You will lose AF when you add the 2x.
When I had film cameras, I had a set of Canon lenses, including 2x teleconvertor. Apart from difficulty of autofocus, the quality of the picture is not the same as with a lens of the same equivalent focal length. At best it can be used as a cheaper alternative to buying lens of the required focal length.

You would first have to visit the manufacturer's website to check compatability of the lense with the teleconverter. I use a 1.4 with some of my lenses with good results. Just remember any flaws in your photo will be magnified and a good tripod in necessary. I have read a lot of articles on teleconverters and found most photographers prefer the 1.4 over the 2.0 for image quality.
Glad you posted that, I was wondering the same thing.
I agree with KarlB. I own a Nikon D5000, with the 18-55 and 70-300mm lenses. I was advised by a camera store expert that the quality of my pics would suffer with a 2.0 converter because of too little light. So I bought the 1.4 and have been very happy with the results. I can easily compensate for the fstops.
You usually will find it is better to use a larger lens than a tele converter with a wide angle lens.
The converter would be much cheaper than a 400mm lens. If you have a local camera shop, check in with them though. According to B&H, the canon tele converter isn't compatible with that lens. That may just mean your auto focus won't work with it.
