This hawk let me get real close to him. I am in central Florida. Maybe a red shoulder hawk. He was VERY big.

It is definitely not a Red Shouldered hawk but I can't find anything in my Audubon's guide that looks close except the Gyrfalcon and its range doesn't include Florida.

I looked also in books. Thought it was a red shouldered hawk but then again it didn't. Thanks

I'm pretty sure it's a juvenile red-tailed hawk. The juveniles have yellow eyes and the adults have brown eyes. Here is a shot of one I got some time ago.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Dave. They are so common out here in California. We also get them very occasionally in the darker morph phases.

Checked Peterson Eastern Birds and I agree with previous posts - immature Red-Tailed. Young hawks can be confusing!

Sorry to burst everybody's bubble but none of those are a juvenile red-tail. Juvenile Red Tails will have a white chest and yellow eyes. The first one is an adult ferruginous Hawk. You can tell this by the feathers that go all the way down the legs and the feathers are red if he was a juvenile they would not be red and the chest would be solid white. They are the second largest Hawk under the golden eagle.

The second picture I'm not sure but I think maybe it's a Coopers Hawk. The third picture I believe without seeing the back is an immature
Ferruginous Hawk. I'm a falconer and have flown 3 juvenile Red Tails and I just released my ferruginous Hawk
