After seeing Thomas902's photos taken with the Nikon AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G VR lens I purchased one to try.
I went to the races on Friday and after switching my Nikkor 70-300 for the new AF-P version my D500 when "crazy" exactly as described by AK Grandpa in his 5-29-2017 post titled In a Panic over D500 not working right. Like him I panicked put my older 70-300 lens back on, hit the reset buttons and went shooting. Saturday I decided to try the new lens again. This time everything went great with the new lens performing even better than I had expected. Being a "kit lens it is much lighter and may not be as sturdy but coupled to the D500 it sure isn't lacking in the IQ department. I have attached a photo taken in day light and one under track lighting.

The shots are great. What settings?

I almost always shoot the races in shutter priority. The street stocks were Shutter 1/160, Aperture (auto) f 11, IS0 400. The Late model settings were Shutter 1/125, Aperture (auto) f 4.5 (max) , IS0 1600. With good light I select ISO 200 and use a polarizer. I gage the sharpness by the yellow "Speedway" decal on the car.

Really nice work.
The AF-P 70-300 lens seems to be as sharp as the 70-300 FX Nikkor that I usually use. Our outdoor sports season is a lot shorter than down south. Makes me jealous to see yours during our seemly endless cold weather.
