Remember a while back when Googles started giving Nik away for free. Turns out there was a reason for that. Google is done with Nik. No more support or development.

I'm sure everything will keep working, but there will be no improvements and no support.

We all pretty much knew this was going to happen.

What makes you say that?

For me, when they posted it was free and that there were no plans to update or improve the plugins over time pretty much told me it was a dead product that would work as long as it works, and when it no longer works then it no longer works

Exactly.

Software isn't forever.

So why did Google acquire it in the first place? To use the technology elsewhere?

Yep. It works very well, and as a standalone if desired.

I can't comment on MAC environments but I have quite a bit of 1990's era software that works just fine on the latest iteration of Windows 10.

Probably. In addition to the software itself, they got all the technology that went into creating it.

Oh, I just re-read the initial announcement of March 2016 and I can see no reference at that time saying there would be no further development. In fact, they seemed very excited about it. Apart from the one today, when did they make an earlier announcement about abandoning it? I can't find one.

May be a good idea to make a back up of the software if you plan to continue using it in the future, so that you can reinstall it whenever necessary. That way you will be able to use it as long as you have an operating system that can run it.

They wanted NIK for its infrastructure so they can use it in their smart phones. Some of the new features in Android camera I'm sure were ported from CEP. Google doesn't care about PC or MAC computers, just smart phones and tablets. I think there are already features of NIK incorporated in the new Google phone. NIK also had a killer cloud infrastructure which Google wanted. Kind of like an Instagram thing. CEP has worked so far for years after this acquisition and hopefully will for many years to come. There is also Topaz Labs and On1 Photo Raw if CEP ever stops working.

That's because Microsoft has so many corporate and government customers who squeal like stuck pigs when they break something obsolete.

Apple customers are used to frequent software replacement.
