They wouldn't get away with anything that would put the power companies out of business in the good ol' US of A.
It been tried and the owner was thrown in jail! His prototypes, and records, were stolen by the police and his help were threatened with their lives if they testify for the defense. It's all verified in court records on LA, CA.

Not off the top of my head. I'll dig out the video tape I've got down the basement.
The Sherif of the County LA is in claimed they didn't take anything out of his building. The tape shows lines of people hauling stuff out in garbage bags. Of course that wasn't admit-able as evidence.
