I have lost the auto focus on my canon 7d. Im a newby to photography and am at a loss to fix it. I have restored it back to factory settings but still no go.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Cheers

Is there a manual/auto focus button (not menu selection) on the body and/or the lens? Nikon has them, but I don't know about Canon. If so, make sure they are both on auto.

Is your lens an AF lens? What lens are you using?

Check the selection on your lens.

There is a setting both on the lens, and in the menu. Check both; just setting things back to default, does not change some settings in canon cameras.

Did you take the battery out for a few seconds and put it back? Did you try different lenses? I can practically guarantee that's it's not the camera, and someone will have a definitive answer for you.

Canon went crazy with the 7D and included lots of ways to cancel auto focus in the menu system to save battery.

If you accidentially redefine the set button to use these cusom controls you can easily and accidentially disable the autofocus.

I had to review one and I am searching through my notes. Check Custom function level 4 option 1.

This is the menu screen you want. Make sure you do not have AF/Off on any of the custom functions.

Its a canon 18-200. Ive been away all weekend and it worked fine but for some reason now it just wont auto. I have googled it and apparently this is quite common.

Please if you may what was the problem? For others in the same situation. Was it just in the menu?
