Please ignore the Fake News thread saying otherwise in this section.
On page 2 someone finally provided a link to race rules, but too many people don't seem to read that far down, so the uninformed comments go on-and-on.

Seems like fake news is more popular than reality.

The police are too busy protecting actual people against actual harm to enforce inane rules.

And the problem is there is no way to fix false reports. Just as many people here have responded to page one without finding the truth on page two, various other sites may spread this wrong news, using page one to support their "news", and most of their readers won't bother to go beyond that.

I'm assuming that you are referring to this link: "ht tp : // w w w.indianapolismotorspeedway - dot- com/events/indy500/fan-info/gate-search-policy"
Hopefully people will do their own research, check websites, make phone calls, and so on.
Also, I hope this thread will not get bounced to links and resources.
So much for Faux News!
...this morning I'd just read a couple of posts into the thread, and figured "...oh, well!" Just got home and...good, it's not true! I shrugged initially because I ran into lens nazis at the University of Phoenix Stadium, heck it must've been right after it was built, you couldn't have a lens over 6" long...yes, hard to believe and I did get the one in I wanted which measured 5 3/4"...heh, *before* extending to get 400mm, so the joke was on them. Same thing in 2006 at Camp Randall Stadium at University of Wisconsin...sheesh...

You can try to photograph the race if you want to, but I always found the spectators to be more interesting, so most of my snapshots could be taken with a box camera.
1972 - delay because of issue with car
1972 - delay because of rain
1973 - partying in the infield
1990 - partying more important than car on the track

Part of the issue here is people thinking of the Indy 500 as a 2-1/2 hour {boring} race. Honestly, professionals get the best spots from which to take pictures; the best view as a spectator is via TV. The reason for going in person is all the other stuff - the "party" - and that is the dimension of the race professionals won't cover {and doesn't require "professional" gear}

Yes, I provide a link over in L&R where it belongs, and I think it's OK to reference it from here

Yes, IMS would need their own control tower if the allowed so-called drones {IMS already has a hospital worthy of a small city}

A few years ago, our twenty-something daughter borrowed our tent because she and her friends wanted to experience "the 500", and camping was how they were going to make it feasible.
She had a great time, she who gets bored watching 30 minutes of racing on TV. There is much more to experience {and photograph} than the action on the track.

And despite the presence of this thread, and links to the actual rules, people keep ignorantly responding to the vague "I think I saw somewhere" comment, and the False News thread is now over 100 comments 6000 "reads"

I should have posted this snapshot with the earlier ones. I took it with an Instamatic 100 in 1968, but the truth it shows it what matters. Even professionals stay a respectful distance from the track and its barriers unless they need to be closer; we, the general public, are kept further away. Physical facts don't allow us to get the kind of picture they get, but no one is willing for us to risk our lives in so doing.
But, you can bring whatever camera with whatever lens and photograph anything you can legally see. The important thing is that you enjoy yourself and return home safely.
