Trump's proposed budget.

The proposal hinges on a growth in the economy of some 50% above its current roughly 2% per annum growth. It also features tax cuts, apparently basing these on Laffer's curve, which Kansas used not too long ago. The budget will slash Medicaid and shred much of the safety net for middle and lower income folks. But the top income groups will see sizable reductions in their tax bill; the presumption is that they will invest in job-growing industries, etc. Supply side economics once again.

Here's an editorial from the Kansas City Star which describes what Governor Sam Brownback's experiment in cutting taxes in the expectation of increased revenue. Brownback brought Arthur Laffer to the capitol to instruct the budget folks, and the result wasn't pretty.

If this sort of budgeting didn't work in Kansas, why would anyone expect it to work in the country as a whole? Sounds like magical thinking.

Uh, huh, if the 23 million kicked off health care and those with pre-existing conditions who may lose state coverage live long enough.

I seem to recall that Trump had promised during the campaign and even after his inauguration that Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid would not be reduced.... Are his promises worthless? While the chances of this budget being adopted are probably slim, it does present a disturbing image of the thinking of at least some Republicans. It seems that ideology "trumps" all....

Simply put: Yes, his promises are worthless.

Even so. And with possible/probable Russian influence on the e******n I wonder about the future of our republic. Was it Lenin or Stalin who cited the value of useful i***ts? Is Trump such a person? Trump seems to have no solid core values, beyond "What's in it for me?" He seems to monetize any and all actions.

"Useful i***ts"---that says a lot.
I wonder, and I worry about the future of this Republic.

The proposal hinges on a growth in the economy of ... (show quote)

Well....

I think it will be good. We have a lot of waste. There are over 90 "welfare" programs, and bureaucracy is bloated and inefficient. I think some cuts will prove to be a good move. We were headed down the road to socialism, which hasn't worked anywhere.

Libs always predict "people dying in the streets"... so I pretty much ignore the liberal hyperbole and watch for results. Go TRUMP!

Not touching SS or Medicare. Never said Medicaid wouldn't be touched. If you worked in healthcare and saw how many able bodied people are on disability and Medicaid, you'd be in favor of revising "the system". Able bodied people should be working, not mooching.

"...down the road to socialism, which hasn't worked anywhere." Please consider the Scandinavian countries, which have a mixture of capitalism and socialism, capitalism restrained by social concern. They are very successful, furnishing their citizens with a standard of living comparable or superior to ours, and excellent health care, education, and those little things like vacations and paid time off for newborns.
