Good to see you back Don, and get a look at some more of your re-enactment images. I really like the vintage processing on this one, and the angle you've taken to the subject. There's nothing that gives this one away - no modern anachronism - to distract. I wish the pole behind him was a bit further away so it didn't get tangled up with the pipe, but with these things, you take what you can get, and you got a lot! Thanks for sharing a nice image.

Thanks for those very kind and knowledgeable comments Minnie. I added some more reenactment images to my flickr page, see link below, that I took in November, 2016.

Nice facial expression. His look doesn't give it away whether they are winning or losing the battle. More like contemplating their next move. Nice tones to this shot. I like the sun creeping in with the shade on his face. I guess the face did it for me. lol

The post is what it is, although you could take care of it if you chose…..the image seems a touch soft to me Don, not sure if that lens at extremes is sharp as I know nothing about it. I think cropping down and in from the upper right corner placing his left eye dead center of the thirds intersection strengthens the presentation of your subject and portrays the post more in the background as should be….just my thoughts as you did ask.

I'm guessing that this is a reenacter? As such the subdued processing works very well. That pipe is perfect; and I like the way you can see the eyes. They are in shadow; but that is not a bother to me. I like the tent that is out of focus in the background. The only thing that bothers me is the tent post. Because it interferes with the figure, I see it as a distraction. You might not have had the opportunity to move around or ask the person to move slightly. It is a well processed photo that has interest for the viewer. I like it.

Download absolutely necessary to appreciate stare...a thousand yards above and beyond you and your lens enhances the sense of a true candid shot.

Well captured, Don!

Thanks for that praise NJFrank, appreciate it. This was just before the battle started so I guess he was in the planning stage or thinking of the letter he was going to write to his family before going into battle.

Did not go back to check yet Frank but I seem to remember the lens was near it's upper level (18-200MM VRII). Your comments have been noted, it is how we all get better, Thanks.

If I move to my left Erich I loose the eyes I was after. If I move to my right I get just one side of his face. It was kind of like street photography, take the sign or pole or shadow where you do not want it or lose the entire shot. I made the choice to shoot as best I could. He was not posed and did not notice me sizing up the shot so I didn't want to ask him to move. Think I would have lost the "Moment" of the shot. Thanks for your insight of my image and your comments.

Such high praise from you Dave is very much appreciated. Not the total, nothing else to do improve the shot but working on it. Thanks again.

Don, the soft lighting along with the depth of field helps this image tremendously, IMO. Being discreet is almost the only way to capture the expression and pose of your choice. If you had asked, the outcome would have been so much different. We just have to get what we can get at the time. Although, afterwards an asked posed shot could have been possibly attainable, but since you got what was needed/wanted then there is only reason to move on to the next subject. Nice, I like it very much. The only thing I don't like, is that I wasn't there with you.

Kinda like what we do in the street Dave. Can't always get the position we want, can't move the sign post, can't stop the guy from walking into your shot but you do the best you can with what you got. I also really like this image and pretty much got out of it what I wanted. Tent post was mentioned by several but by going to another angle I would not have gotten this shot. Your kind praise of this image is greatly appreciated. Wish you could have been there also, I very much enjoyed our time in New Orleans.
Next years French Quarter Fest in April 12 - 15, 2018, hope you & Sharon can make it. The reenactment I shot is always about one week before Thanksgiving.

I like the soft colors and the richness in fabric, canvas, hair and face. The pole (at first) also hit me as a negative but it sort of grew on me. I like the lines that we get with the strap, pole, and pipe. I think the strap, pole, and edge of the tent really do a nice job of framing the face and the mottled light on him is perfect.

Thank you Piet, that is surely lofty praise for the image, it is very much appreciated. You hit all the high points I also saw in this image.
