How big is too big?

I looked but couldn't find the answer. What is the maximum file size for posting to the Photo Gallery. I was unable to post a 25.2 MB file earlier today.

For posting on the web, certainly here on UHH that is WAAAAAAY too big. First of all, forget the size in MB. All you need to do is size it by pixel dimension and at a quality of oh...say...9...even 8. I think I size mine to around 1000 or 1200 pixels on the long side.

The answer is 20MB, either as a single file or the sum of multiple file attachments.

- Maximum dimensions for images are 600x800. So if you want to post a crop and be assured that it doesn't get reduced, then resize it on your end down to at most 600 pixels in width. Images with dimensions of 600x800 or less aren't modified during the upload process.

However, all of my posts are 2048 on the long side, and bigger if it is a stitched pano. As long as I say under 20 mb for all the images in a post it is not a problem. My images have not been reduced.

I have also settled on 2048 on the long side. It works extremely well for me.

That is what the thumbnail displays (it does not get cropped, regardless of original size - just compressed). If you provide a download link ("store original") folks can see larger. But, as mentioned, anything over 2500 pixels wide is likely wasted because most people aren't using larger devices to view.

Linda, if I display a 2048x1400 image on my HD monitor 91920x1280), it fills the screen and I can still zoom a little bit. But if I were using a 4k display (3840 x 2160), it would only take up only slightly more than 1/4 of the screen. A Dell P2415Q is a 24" display and 4K, while my U2413s are 24" but only standard resolution.

It's hard to imagine that many UHH users are downloading photos posted to Photo Gallery and viewing on such high quality screens, especially when so many folks are casual viewers who only use the digest for their daily viewing pleasure
(and for many of us, it's more about general impact or creativity, not pixel peeping)For outside UHH or for when assisting someone with pp (or issues like focus or camera/lens anomalies), I can absolutely understand the value of larger files.
