Depends on the lighting situation. Also, in any case it protect the front element of the lens from inadvertent damage.

You should ALWAYS use a Lens Hood. PERIOD.
Except as noted above, in situations where on-camera pop-up flash use will be necessary.
Not with the D500 (no popup flash).

Guess that means you can leave the lens hood on then...
I never use one ,never had any problems.
Glad you've never had a problem without a hood. As the old saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Regarding lens hoods, however, I've known folks whose hoods likely prevented front element damage -- as well as at least one who experienced impact damage that a hood might well have prevented. So here this saying might apply: If it ain't broke, you're lucky. The choice is yours, of course. Best of luck!

I understand your reasoning. I don't have life insurance because I have never died.
In blatant disregard for the "carry it in, carry it out" edict a lens hood for my 18-200 lies at the bottom of 7th Lake in the Adirondacks. I paddle bow and the camera gear stays in a dry bag behind me. I have the standard two hands. One to hold the paddle and one to open the bag, retrieve the camera, get the strap over my head, retrieve the lens cap to a fix to the lens,... oops! I did not replace it and some how life goes on.

HEYYYYYYY!!!
My old man and brother had a place in Lewis County outside of Watson!
REALLY nice place on the mountain side with a cabin, barn, and Sugar Shack for 50 Acres of Maple. I LOVED that place! 4 wheelers, snowmobiles, Turkey, Deer, and Red Squirrels.... oh yeah, and Black Flies that would fight the Mosquitoes for first dibs!
I miss that place....
it always get's to me when we get so dogmatic with terms like "always" and "never". when I started out in the 50's, few lenses came with hoods and filter thread hoods were not around. a few lenses did and still do have recessed front elements. even the guys at Nat Geo got along without them. last week I spent a day at the zoo shooting without one. the lens didn't come with one, it was a sunny day and I kept the sun over my shoulder. on some lenses like my 8mm and 5.8mm they make no sense at all. I have a big bunch of hoods in my equipment case, but if I forget one, it's not the end of the shooting session.

I shot over three thousand pictures one weekend and maybe 10 had signs of flare!

SHHH! Don't tell anybody. The Northwest corner of the Adirondacks remains relatively unknown to the masses. In that area Stillwater is another Lake I have often canoed. Poorly named, however, especially when paddling out to the West. If roast beef at the Barns Corners Hotel was part of your memories it is gone, sadly.
A Trooper that participated in the search up North for those convicts that escaped a couple of years back showed me his arms and the back of his neck. Kind of a smorgasbord for the black flies!

Bet it was a Canon.
They squeeze every penny possible out of it's "consumers"...
