I recently took couple pics at a homecoming dance. Was limited to where photos could be set up. I have a TERRIBLE background, and would like to change it, or somehow get rid of it. How do I do that? I need really, really simple steps! (Like first-grade level  )
If you crop to an 8x10 vertical then you will eliminate the background wall and keep the subjects the same..

Here is the picture cropped to get an idea
That's what I have been doing--just cropping the (you know what) out of them!
Better placement of the background would be advised next time and better framing would save a lot of time
Lesson learned here? If you do this again, it is very important to not cut off the subjects feet, especially the young ladies shoes. If you had shot these in portrait, you wouldn't have such a challenge. Just sayin'
Should have shot them vertical in the first place.
Use the quick selection tool in Photo Shop then drag it to a new blue background.
If you want the kids to look better have them in a V with the bottom of the V next to the background. DO NOT have the girls square with the camera. Even the most petet look like football players. Have them put their wheight on their back foot. Do not let the boy hug the girl as in Pic 1. His hand adds nothing to the picture and his arm like that is in an unnatural position, Have him just drop his hand behind her. Or you may have the boy stand 3/4 behind the girl and both at about a 45 degree angale with weight on their back foot. I would try to find a background to put behind your background. Also if you put them a little closer together the prom background will stand out more. - Dave
Thanks, all for the advice and info. This is a learning process! I am not getting anything for this, and if the kids want copies, they will pay for them. any extra goes back to the school for the senior class. I had no choice on where the set-up of the photos. I did say that if I did something like this again, I really needed a blank, solid color wall behind the arch!

In very, very, simple steps, how do I do that? I have Elements 8
It takes a while to explain. I don't have Elements but I'm sure you can do it there. Go to Adobe TV tutorials on [selections] and they can explain it in the correct way. The tool is called the [quick selection tool]. It selects the part of the picture you want to save and then you create a new file that is just a solid color background. You then drag the selected part of the picture to the new background. I wrote out the steps for someone on this site before. I'll see if I can find it and send it to you.
