Amazingly, the sun was out on Tuesday (the weather here in the UK the last few weeks has been pretty dire) so I though I'd trot out and see what I could get. This area is but a short walk from where I live and is rather picturesque.
BTW, the first shot is one of my first attempts at HDR. Enjoy, and comment as you see fit :D

Wow... Very nice looking backyard....;0) Is that a train or auto bridge? Looks like a postal box in the lower left side of the panorama.

It's a railway viaduct. Until the coast road was built in the 30s, it was the only way for people to get from one village to the other. It must have been rather fun to walk across it with the 8.15 to Hartlepool whistling past your ear
Sorry but it's not a post box. Actually I can't imagine what it is you're seeing.

It has a shape like the postal boxes here in the states. I'm sure it's something different, but that's what I thought of when I first saw it. It would be strange place of one if it was....;0)
Thanks... Mike

It would be a very peculiar place for a post box (although considering the state our postal service is in, it wouldn't be a bit surprising). It's actually a tourist information sign extolling the splendours of the local flora and fauna. Most of this area is a designated SSSIĀSite of Special Scientific Interest. Coal mining was an enormous industry in this part of the world during the 20th century and millions of tons of waste from the mines was dumped on the shoreline. Aggressive reclamation and conservation projects over the last twenty years has returned much of the landscape to its former glory.

Thanks... I was just curious what it was. Sounds like your Postal Service is as bad as ours....;0)

I saw similar viaducts in South Wales and wondered what they were used for. Makes for absolutely wonderful photographing. Are they still used as a rail system?

Absolutely. It's part of the main line from Middlesbrough to Newcastle although short-sighted governments have closed all but a few of the local stations along the route.

Geesh, what's with that, anyway. Here we are trying to figure out a fast rail system between cities and here you already have the bridges and governments want to close the stations. Go figure.
