Any idea whether the Airport in Johannesburg will hand check film before boarding a connecting flight to Victoria Falls? Any other advice or insights about traveling with film in southern Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana? Any advice much appreciated.

Someone recently posted about getting his film ruined after making several flights. I believe it was carried on with him, but it may have been checked.
Thanks. Found that post about mid eastern airports. Culprit may have been a hotel scanner.
In South Africa and Botswana you have to go through security and all your hand luggage and any other items will be put through an x-ray machine. Will only physically check items if they have a problem with the images they are receiving. You have to go through a metal detector and you may be frisked.

Does anyone make a lead lined container for film?

I have several of those... although some airports would just adjust their X-rays, negating the protection.

Right. An X-ray-proof container would not get by security.
As mentioned on other topics: if you are going to shoot film, FedEx it. Not only may it get X-Rayed on the way over, it might get X-Rayed on the way back. Happy Shooting.
If this trend continues, the only images we will see will have been taken within road driving distance from the photographer's home!
True enough. I have kept film out of xray machines in a number of airports in Europe: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Croatia; and South America: Chile and Peru. All 400 iso. In Spain I used 100 iso film and did not bother. Turned out fine but do not recall why I did not try there. I get more nervous with 400 iso film and less modern countries.
Since 9-11-2001, traveling by Airlines just keep increasing restrictions on customers. Besides the added, and needed security, we also get dragged off planes after paying for a seat ticket. Times certainly have changed. Film can't even get a pass.

So then they would have to hand check the contents.
I have a lead bag like thingy. I was all over So. Africa a few years ago and shot medium format and 35 m and got them home in good shape. Wish I could go back. Don
