Going for painterly, but not aggressively; using textures but not in-your-face. Hoping for a feeling of anticipating the next moment in time. Suggestions, feedback, edits welcomed. Thank you!

Quite a shot, Linda! The effects are subtle and well done, plenty of color and appeal, and you caught him at a perfect moment. Nice work!

I'm not sure what is really happening but it looks like the bird is trying to land on the reeds or grasses. They certainly don't look like they would support the weight but the feet seem to be trying to grasp a perch. Since your title is Lift Off, the opposite must be true. Is he taking off from the ground or was he somehow higher up? The colors and composition are appealing and it is a thought provoking shot!

I like, ... the bird is supported on the apex of a triangle with spikes reaching for their pray. The blur of the wings give dynamic motion effect. The painterly effect of the otherwise dull blue/gray sky takes care of the sky boaringness. Here in Florida recently or sky is blue gray with plumbs of smoke from the many fires.

What program/plugin for the painterly effect??

Thank you all!

Treepusher and Cwilson: ("perfect moment, "what is really happening?") the image was part of series of burst shots of take-off. Works great with the Oly, and gives me a raw besides. Below are the two immediately preceding. These are 2x digital zoom jpgs, no edits. The one presented for feedback was edited and cropped from raw.

dpullum: ("which program") I'm so glad you asked Third pic below is screen print of the layers: Nik contrast color range and glamour glow, Topaz Detail "smooth and bold" filter, Topaz Simplify buzsim IV with many slider changes, two separate textures (one applied twice) in different blend modes, other adjustments, masking, opacity changes.

Sometimes I know what I want for outcome, sometimes I have a happy accident sometimes I am not sure how to get there so might end up with more layers than needed.

Much appreciated!

Thanks for sharing what you've done. I think everything works really well for this image. The direction of the stems (leading lines) and the placement of the bird create an interesting symmetry in this composition that appears to be the right choice. Colors and textures add to the whole, too.

Excellent example of increasing your chances of the capturing the "decisive moment"

Amongst dense, slender reeds! That where yellow-headed blackbirds are most comfortably at home!

Well done ma'am!

Thank you kindly, Dave Shot from the car, and funny to see - on two separate days - their presence along the edges of the pavement, gravel, weeds, wet...just strolling along looking for bugs, I guess.

OK, OK, Linda, I know I should do layer mods like you and like Topaz Webinar told us to do.... That will be my 2018 New Year's resolution. With out a layers record like you have, I will never remember how I got here to there!

I was so glad I stuck with the initial difficulties in "getting" the idea of layers. Even though I haven't learned much more since then, lol, they make editing so incredibly versatile.

Linda, Layers and Masking are the two most powerful tools in Photoshop/PSE!
You just proved that with your latest photo! Well done!
