Can't you recognize a bit of mockery when it stares you in the face?

I’m disappointed that you would take that seriously!

Like most hobby snappers I shoot RAW for the same reason that I put a number on the door and painted a big white stripe over the roof of my shopping jalopy.

Not because it makes my clapped out old bomb go any faster, but it makes me feel like I'm a racing driver.

I shoot RAW because of the flexibility one has to make an image what you want it to be. Whether the best possible rendition of the image, at least in your mind's eye. Or a completely surreal view is your choice.

Aside from a bit of crop, the chipmunk image received little PP. The blow boat shot needed a good deal more to be the photo I wanted.

RAW gives me the flexibility to adjust-change my image to look the way I wish it too.

I shoot in Raw 99% of the time although my camera affords me an equally nice jpeg in terms of IQ. I've been doing this ever since I jumped into digital 25 years ago. With regard to exposure, my new camera provides me a "real time" live view with highlight/shadow warnings which I correct with exposure compensation. In addition I have live control of my highlights/mids/shadow and can dial-in a perfectly balanced exposure when I need to when it's important. The correction for adjusting critical exposure is a super-imposed graph to adjust the "S" curve + an overall mid tone adjustment. There is also a way to get a LCD displayed example of what the final product will look like - preview! All of this takes about 2 sec. so if you have the time ..... when you got it dialed-in, hold down the shutter button and go!! God bless technology and Olympus!

I myself as a Rookie, have purchased a Nikon D3300 with 3 lens and have absolutely "0" experience in image processing, and having a Acer Chromebook 15 laptop, do not know exactly what Photo-editing program I may use on this Chromebook, so I now ask my fellow UHH Photographer's to aid and guide me in my Photo-editing education. HELP!

I myself as a Rookie, have purchased a Nikon D3300... (show quote)

I recommend you go to the Nikon website and download their free Photo Browser (ViewNX-i) and free Raw Processor (NX Capture-D) along with their manuals. It's not a full photo editor but has some basic global editing (e.g., Levels, Curves, Sharpening, etc) that work for post-conversion files like JPGs. As a RAW converter, I like the way it handles my NEF files better than 3rd party software and the D-Lighting feature is a surprisingly powerful tool. It's free and a good place to start. Hope that helps!

As I have explained in several other threads on this subject, I got into photography through a back door - it started off as one branch of my interest in railroads. Railroad photographers traditionally followed the same standards as news photographers; first I shot Kodachrome, and now I shoot JPEG - all for the reason that others can be assured that the work they are looking at is what I photographed.
