I was at a ukulele workshop 90 minutes away yesterday. My son called at 7:00 PM saying he hit a pothole (in the rain) and had two flat tires. After driving home, changing my clothes, getting tools and snow tires loaded into my car, I drove another forty minutes to where he was stuck. Fortunately, he managed to limp into a parking lot and was right under a light. Unfortunately, it was pouring. By the way, those little jacks that come standard on cars are awful. The Honda Fit doesn't have a real crank. I had to attach the lug wrench in a T-shape, so it was slow going.
Both tires had their sidewalls blown out. He was riding on a back road, typically filled with potholes. If the hold hadn't been filled with water, he would have seen how deep it was.
I'm not looking for an answer here, just venting.

And you still remember that! We put snows on all four wheels in the winter.

Happened to me also but only one tire - at an intersection of a local road and a major road, 4 cars back fro the red light
Here in Quebec there mandatory from mid November to mid April
I had a Honda Fit. Great gas mileage. Unfortunately the small-diameter, low-profile tires were no match for Michigan roads. In the 20 months of (Honda Fit) ownership seven of my tires were destroyed by potholes. During my approximate half-century of driving other cars only one of my tires ended up being replaced due to sidewall bulge. The original equipment tires that came with the Fit are absolutely substandard. They have thin sidewalls and do not even come with a mileage rating. This is not a slam against the Fit, except to say that Honda really missed the mark with the tire/wheel combination.
I had to attach the lug wrench in a T-shape, . . . .
Uhh, if it was my son, HE would be attaching the lug wrench in the rain,
while I sat in my warm car giving him instructions thru the slightly craked
open window on how to do so !
Sounds like low profile tires. I've lost three of them to potholes--all sidewall blowouts. Just proves that looking good is not as good as being good!

I'm more "mechanical" than he is, but we were both working in the rain - loosening, tightening, carrying, etc. Yes, we were both miserable, with him waiting 2 1/2 hours for me to arrive. : )

I didn't know that was so common. I guess I've been lucky.

Agree completely. (Or call AAA.)
This is ironic. I was getting ready to take my granddaughter to the airport as she is going to Paris and London with her college choir. Got in the truck, put in in reverse, it wouldn't move. I got out to find out why and discovered both passenger side tires are flat. I live 8 miles out of town so I borrowed the neighbor's truck, bought two cans of fix-a-flat. I used up both cans on one tire and it is still flat.
I'm waiting for Enterprise to bring the rental car so we can get to the airport. Fortunately, since she has an early flight, I have a room reservation in Lubbock, so we won't miss her plane.
