Mine goes black, too, but I'm not on it now, so I can't help. I always thought it was strange having an image as a screen saver. Where are the savings?

Do you mean a screen saver - usually an animated display that disrupts and hides what is on the screen until you touch a key or move the mouse, OR a wallpaper for the desktop - a static picture that replaces the black screen and has the normal icons displayed on top of it?

Two very different things, both managed in the control settings easily

Right click on desktop.
Change desktop background.
Solid colors. Take your choice...

The original reason for the screen saver was for CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) displays. If one non-changing image was left on the screen for a very extended time, it would eventually "burn" the image into the phosphorous coating on the inside of the face of the CRT, and you could see a ghost image when the CRT was turned off.
So you were "saving" your screen.

Plasma TVs had the same problem.

Marty
To turn off the screen saver, click "System Preferences" > click on "Desk Top & Screen Saver"> choose "Screen Saver" > at the bottom click on the up/down arrows for "Start After" > choose "Never".

Right click on any area of the desktop. Open Screen Saver. Go thru the options there. Mac beat me to it.

I'm a PC user and don't know Macs. What I've done is taken a photo with the lens cap on and upload the image as a screen saver.

How did you make that a screen saver? Or did you mean you used it as the wallpaper or background?

Probably could choose a "photo folder" in the screen saver options.

I get the feeling many do not know the difference between a screensaver and wallpaper, I have seen many who refer to wallpaper as a screen saver and vice versa

As far as I concern, the wallpaper for the desktop IS the screensaver!
