Bridge to Somewhere, of sorts

My parents moved our family to South Bend in 1960. I left in 1965 to go to college, grad school, and work, but my wife and I kept coming back to visit family. In 1967, I first became involved in photography, transferring the railroads I was watching to a more permanent form in film. We moved back to this area four years ago because of good work for my wife {and the opportunity to help provide care for my mother who is now 92}.

Just recently I discovered this old railroad bridge, which was replaced roughly ninety years ago by the bridge I had actually been aware of for all these years. With a city park on its east side, and a commercial "park" on its west side, you have to know it is there in order to find it. When I sent these pictures out to our daughters this afternoon, the older one responded with "It's nice Indiana still has new train stuff for you." {remember, I've been taking pictures like this for fifty years now}

Looks in good shape. They make these into rail trails for hiking here. Nice shots.

This one is used by some kind of trail, but I'm guessing the trail route is much younger than the bridge. The bridge was "retired" when Union Station was built, requiring the GTW to re-route their tracks through town, and most of the land used by the GTW's old route had long been claimed by others long before rails-to-trails became popular.
