Shooting tethered with a D800e and Lightroom - sometimes works, often doesn't

Any suggestions for a fix, Nikon D800e, Lightroom CC, tether tools cable, jerk stop, MacBook Pro and shooting in my home studio (fancy name for my garage). Sometimes it works just fine, sometimes it won't work at all, and sometimes it works OK for a while and then stops working for no apparent reason. Nikon has had the camera twice and reported that they can't duplicate the problem. I've tried two different cables, even, so now I'm out of ideas and I need to solve this problem. Any suggestions that don't involve getting a new camera?

Personally, as someone who has struggled with iOS devices, I'd blame the Mac.

I assume you've been through:

Jon,

I use digicamcontrol with my D7100 and it works great. It can be downloaded free.

Use Capture One. Much better at tethering. And I have a LR user, and have tethered with my D800s - with the same unreliable results.

I used to have this problem, but it appears to have been solved - unfortunately I don't know why. Currently I shoot a D800e with the standard length Tether Tools Cable into a Windows 10 laptop running Lightroom CC. I used to have connection problems when I was running a Windows 7 laptop. I did a lot of research on the subject and one suggestion that I read seemed to help. It was to put a formatted but completely empty SD card in the camera rather than a card with any images on it. I tried it, and it worked! The reliability of my connection went from 25% to nearly 100%. As I migrated to Windows 10 I continued to use the empty SD card trick without thinking. Recently I found that I had forgotten to put the empty SD card in the camera and Lightroom continued to recognize the camera just fine. The fact that the empty SD appears to no longer be necessary may have to do with improvements in Lightroom or the way Windows 10 is involved, but I now have a reliable tethered connection. Oh - the other thing that I have taken to doing is to have the camera connected and turned on when I start the tethered capture. That said, there are instances where I may be shooting tethered for a while, turn the camera off, remove the card and then replace the card and turn the camera back on, and Lightroom again sees the camera and I can continue on with no connection problems. Hope this helps!

I have found CaptureOne to be really good with wired tethering and I have found the CamRanger to be the best wireless tethering system.

If Nikon can not solve it, you have a problem that you will have to solve yourself. KISS. Forget being tethered.

Hi Jon,
I had trouble with my D750 when I thought I'd get creative and plug two USB cords together so I could place the camera further from the computer. The D750's ability to communicate with the computer was hit-and-miss with the two-cord setup. When I replaced the two USB cables with one of the same length as the two, my problem was solved. I don't know if this could be your problem but ...? Take care & ...

I had an issue (a year ago) with Light Room CC tethered with D610. I got connection error messages in LR and could not run tethered. Some how LR CC wanted to be connected in order to run tethered. I was shooting in a location with no Wi-Fi/internet connection. Adobe CC support walked me through a settings change and all has worked fine since. Sorry, I can't remember the what the setting changes were. It might be a LR setting issue like mine was?
Very annoying to be sure. Best of luck.

I assume you are using the latest Lr CC update. Sounds like a cable or connector problem. Since Nikon couldn't duplicate the problem, the camera connector isn't the problem. That leaves the cable and the computer connectors. The easiest thing to check is your computer connectors. Try different computer inputs with the cable. If you get the same problem, buy a new cable. If it doesn't work, take it back and have your tether setup checked out at a camera store.

How long is the cable? Just one, or multiple cables hooked in series?

Sounds like a procedure issue. I find that complicated set-ups work repeatedly when you meticulously document the set-up and the order you connect and turn-on the elements. Most of my past problems usually disappear when I am anal about setting up.
