I am looking for the best 85 mm or 105 mm lens for my Nikon D810 to shoot senior portraits. Do I go with the Nikon or the Sigma ART lens?

I am a Canon man and I believe in sticking with the camera name.I bought the Tamron 16/300 for my 70 D and have thoughts of did I make the right choice. If I had it to do over I would choose Canon.

Nikon 85mm 1.4 or Nikon 105mm 1.4. Take your pick. Both are excellent.

Sigma's 85mm Art Lens. It's huge and well made, and has great reviews. One from the Mt Shooter, a member of this forum.

I do not have an 85mm for my Nikon bodies. I use the EF 85 f/1.2L on my Canon bodies. From what I have read, the Sigma Art 85mm is an excellent lens and a good value for the money.

Another good lens is the Nikon 105 2.8 micro. A lot less expensive and well used as a portrait lens.

The best legacy lens on the planet for portraits- the Nikkor 105mm 2.0 af-d DC. Outstanding shallow DOF. Discontinued recently by Nikon. Make sure to spend the time learning to operate the Defocus function.

I shoot with a Nikoor 85mm f1.8 and the 135mm f2.0 DC and they are both fantastic lenses. The DC gives you some interesting flexibility, but not everyone likes it. If I had to choose, I would go with the 105 or 135 DC as my first option because I do like the bokeh creativity you can create with portraits.

Here is an example of the 135DC with a slight rear defocus.

I agree The Nikon 105 2.8 Lens would truly do your D810, all the clarity and sharpnenss and bokeh, it was designed to perform, I don't believe in 3rd party lenses , in the long run you will find Nikon Lenses retain their value and will perform with the quality that you seek.....I use it on my D800 and loves it....

The Nikon 105mm 1.4 is a big, expensive, relatively new lens designed to be the ulrimate portrait lens.

Except for manual focus and price the Zeiss Milvus 85mm f1.4 blows all of the Nikon 85mm lenses away for IQ and color. I also own the Nikon 85mm f1.4 G and the 105mm f1.4, so I can state this from experience.

I use a Carl Zeiss 85mm Z.2 lens and focus it manually. Very good, sharp images. I also use a Nikon 105mm 2.8 VR lens for macro work.

I have no experience with the Zeiss Milvus 85mm---your point is well taken.
