In this world of instant gratification and online imaging I am very happy to belong to an elite group that treasures the art of the print. Our current light box was hand built to handle matted prints up to 20x24 and has served us well over many years. However, many of us are printing panos and larger prints that cover 36" wide and tall. Let me explain, the unit, placed on a table top, when unfolded has a vertical backing that holds the matted print via a small top hook that adjusts up and down and an adjustable base plate that can be raised for smaller prints. It has a lighting system folded out to the front top and bottom and is daylight balanced. For smaller prints the lighting is rather even but with larger prints it can get very top and bottom bright.
I am having a tough time finding such an animal and all I am getting is frames, backlit displays, digital frames etc. but not what I am looking for. I am looking for a unit that will cover 36x36 and have adjustable, re-directional lighting on top, bottom and sides and have a simpler print holding method.
Are any of you familiar with this setup or have a name I can search for?

Local Camera clubs may use a similar set up for competition or 'show and talk' presentations - not everyone likes Power-point! an email to the secretary may get a response.
Alternatively would be a self built unit with lighting '3 sided boxes' top and bottom perhaps a frosted glass/plastic cover would reduce the harshness of the lighting. dimmable LED may give a variable light more suitable to a variety of image types.
Galleries still employ a hanging light strip or mountable spotlights 'at a distance'. The range of LED's available is such that there are more options available
Perhaps even a 'box' type picture frame (The one's that are 2-3 inch deep) with a small battery LED rope light could be a simple solution.

Thanks George, I'm beginning to think a hand made unit would be the best idea. Our current unit requires 2 people to put a new photo up for display. One to set the print and the other to lift the hook and gently drop it down when photo is seated. This procedure is repeated about 20-25 times throughout the night as each persons photo is put up for group comments, critique, words of wisdom and finally a word from the artist. All in all a good system except for the somewhat cumbersome current light box. I have some ideas in mind so I guess I will have to seek out a local wood worker.
