I would think Nikon USA would be happy to repair Gray Nikons for a fee. After all they are in the business to make money, are they not?? Is Canon a little smarter than Nikon??

What are Gray Market Products?
Nikon products that are imported and sold by anyone other than Nikon Inc. USA are considered Gray Market products. These usually are genuine Nikon products that were intended for other Nikon markets; therefore, they may not meet Nikon’s specifications for US products and they may not perform as expected.
Terms to look for
The majority of Gray Market products are sold online at discounted prices. Look for the following terms, which often indicate that a product is Gray Market.
Import ModelWarranty via SellerGray/Grey MarketNikon ImportUSA Seller WarrantyOff MarketDirect ImportUSA Coverage by SellerSeller Warranty
Why are Gray Market products risky?
Since Gray Market products are not imported and distributed by Nikon Inc. USA, you don’t know exactly what you’re getting.
No Nikon Warranty

Gray Market products may contain a limited warranty from the seller, but they are not covered by a Nikon USA warranty.
Non-genuine accessories

May include counterfeit or third party accessories that could damage Nikon equipment.
Fake software

The software included often is either copied or counterfeit.
Wrong power cord

May include an incorrect power cord or adapter not designated for use in the USA.
Not eligible for repair service

Not eligible for Nikon USA repair service, even if you want to pay for it.
Missing user manuals

User manuals are often missing, incomplete or photocopied, and they may even be in a foreign language.
May not be as expected

Since Gray Market products were not designed for sale in the USA, they may not meet your expectations.
Not eligible for rebates

Gray Market products are not eligible for Nikon USA promotions or instant rebates.
Did you know?
A counterfeit accessory like a battery or charger can potentially malfunction and damage your equipment.

MORE ABOUT COUNTERFEIT ACCESSORIES
What if I already own
a Gray Market Nikon product?
Nikon Inc. USA and Nikon Authorized Dealers won’t provide technical support, repair or warranty service on Gray Market products. If you suspect you may have purchased a Gray Market Nikon product, please contact the seller or importer for warranty and service information as well as software updates and downloads. Refer to the seller or the warranty cards included with your product for service contact information.
How can I be sure I'm buying an official Nikon USA product?
Remember: the easiest way to recognize gray market is that the product does not include a Nikon Inc USA warranty. Look for, or ask for a Nikon Inc USA warranty whenever you buy a Nikon product.

Before you invest your money, ask yourself, would you buy a product that doesn’t include a manufacturer’s warranty?

I freaking can't stand people like you who post this kind of crap, then completely ignore every piece of common sense proof posted to dispute your ignorance. In fact, I have seen completely stupid comments made by you on other members posts in attempts to divert an online discussion into non-productive pissing contests. In my opinion, you have proven yourself to be anti-social and laking in photography knowledge - and I believe lacking in any photography skills. Some of the techniques I have seen you use trolling in this forum are, personal insults, name-calling , attacks to negate an opinion by alleging negatives about the person supporting it, impugning other's motives, completely off-topic posts and posting inaccurate "facts” (now known as alternate facts). I suggest your behavior speaks to what type of people 'parented' you.

My post was a direct post from Nikonusa.com. It was not my post, but a post directly from Nikon in an effort to clear up their stance on not servicing Gray Market Nikon products. All of my Nikon equipment comes from Nikon USA products because I want to make sure that if my Nikon equipment needs servicing I can get it done right here in the good old USA. If you felt my post was negative in any way I apologize. But, again, my post was a copied directly from Nikonusa.com. There has been a lot of misconception on this site about NikonUSA and gray market products, I thought this direct quote from Nikon would help clear the air. Sorry you were disappointed by it.

I understand you get frustrated over what you see here as misinformation, and occasionally I have similarly strong opinions, but you just got here. Insulting others on your first day may not be the best way to introduce yourself to this forum. Could you perhaps temper your comments a bit? Your opinions could have been expressed without the insults. And what he posted was straight from Nikon's website, so why are you taking issue with him over it?

Only thing I will do is state what I observed - specifically from this guy - when reviewing threads here before joining, "...In fact, I have seen completely stupid comments made by you on other members posts in attempts to divert an online discussion into non-productive pissing contests..." Furthermore, I will not "temper my comments," although I am new to this forum, I am not to online public forums - That is all I have to say to you, this conversation is over.

Oh I get it now. You're just another trouble making trolling moron. Welcome. We have a bunch of other idiots just like you. I'm sure you'll be very popular with them. You see when dealing with lowlifes like you I can be equally insulting.

Or Nikon doesn't want us buying grey market so they can make more money, by charging the stupid Americans more.

What I've never understood is why Nikon USA won't service grey market Nikon products even on a fee basis. Presumably they make money on paid services so it's not like they're giving away anything. It's not like they're counterfeit products they're servicing. I can understand not wanting to provide service under warranty, but for a fee I can't understand the objection. Canon will service grey market products on a fee basis, and occasionally they've even been known to service them under warranty. Nikon USA's approach probably has not had a significant impact on grey market purchases. I'm fairly confident that most people purchasing gray market don't even realize it or know the potential problems it will cause them. To deny them service, even for a fee, has no upside. It just creates bad will.

Good thought, bdk. But is seems to me the smart company knows they cannot change human nature. So they just set up a system to make money from it?!! If I were Nikon USA I'd start repairing Gray cameras - maybe for a somewhat inflated repair fee??

what you and Nikon are saying is they build inferior products for grey market other wise why would it make a difference where you bought the camera

Because prices are higher in the USA than in most of the other countries so Nikon USA calls Nikon products purchased outside of the USA "Grey Market" and it is up to their discretion whether to service it or not. This keeps these artificial prices jacked up for the American consumer. In other words we are paying for Nagasaki and Hiroshima all over again.
