At a distance because he was trying to run away. I kept trying to get closer but he wouldn't let me.

Yes, he was, but he showed no sign of aggression at all so we felt fine following him for about 15 minutes before he dropped down into the woods.

You only have to outrun the person next to you! I would not want to be close enough to the bear to use the spray - by that time I wonder if the bear would be dissuaded at all...
