Viking Rivercruise

Greetings. I am new to UHH and apologize if Viking River cruises have already been covered as a topic.

I am going on a 10 day river cruise in Portugal. I have a Sony a 6000 that came with a 16 - 50 kit lens. I also have a Sony 35 mm F1 .8 prime lens and a Sony 55-210 mm telephoto lens. I would like the community's advice on what lens or lenses I should bring on my trip and would also like a recommendation for a reasonably priced camera strap to replace the kit strap that came with my camera. Thank you very much.

Welcome to UHH.
Consider the following for a strap

Totally agree with the previous comments . However , you will spend some time in low light at the wine (Port) warehouses in Porto. Also the same situation in some of the wonderful Churches there although there i not the risk of camera shake that you will get after the tastings at the Port warehouses. Make sure you the white port. More importantly though is the Portuguese speciality (a cake) know as Pashtel DeNata. (or something like that ). Addiction to this delicacy has been known.

Enjoy your trip.

Ole Sarge has given you the best advice, you don't want to be lugging a pile of stuff round those places you may visit, remember it could be very hot wandering round large cities like Lisbon, Porto and Salamanca.
There is not much "River Cruising" on that trip it's only the Duoro which is a river and only takes two days as it is not navigable for more than that.
If the weather has been dry so they cannot sail on it you will be taken by buses instead.
Have a great trip.

My choice would be to take all three, but if I were to leave one at home it would be the prime lens.

As for the strap, I recently purchased an Eachshot Focus https://www.amazon.com/EACHSHOT-Focus-F-1-Anti-Slip-Shoulder/dp/B00VK0BYPE/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1494411417&sr=1-2&keywords=eachshot+focus and I love it - however the metal hardware on it seemed a bit flimsy. I replaced the hardware from another strap https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010DNJ9P0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I'd purchased earlier and I'm quite happy with the result.

The price seems to have dropped on the Eachshot Focus since I bought mine for around $17 so you can now buy both of these straps for around $25.

I would take the 35mm and the tele. I think the IQ of the 35mm will be higher than the kit lens. Maybe think of a monopod if you need steady hands. Try Peak design straps, I like their slide version although the sticky bit on one side to stop sliding did melt in Italy due to the heat, Portugal can be hot too.

Love my black rapid straps. If it were me I would take the 16-50 and the telephoto. You can get a belt pouch to hold the telephoto and with the camera on a black rapid strap you would not be tethered too badly. That said your 16-50 should do the trick. Travel lite, travel right. And enjoy the trip, make sure you hold the spouse as much as the camera.

Op/Tech USA: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0010G34WY/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 for hand strap. http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B006W1J3OK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 for sling
Both work great.
I used 18-105 but 16-50 and 55-210 are very good too
Have fun👍

STRAP

As well as a strap to hold the camera you might like to look at a strap that help holding the camera in your hand . I use a PeakDesign clutch strap, it helps supports the weight of the camera in your hand and makes it less tiring and more secure when shooting .

I have an shoulder strap from Blackrapid.com and I love it! It screws into the body of your camera where the tripod would attach. You wear it across your body and it allows you to go hands free but hangs in such a way it is easy to grip your camera without looking and with speed. I have worn this strap on ever trip. I would suggest however checking periodically to see if the screw has loosened. Just a precaution. I have never had it fall off. It is adjustable for position and for right or left handed. Check out the web site. There are straps that can accommodate two cameras. Enjoy your trip. Took a Viking down the Rhine several years ago. Scenery was amazing. I'm sure yours will be also.

I wasn't satisfied with the kit lens that came with my A6000, so I bought a Sony/Zeiss 16-70. It's fabulous. It's tack sharp and has a great range, but it cost about twice what the camera cost. For Viking cruises--we've taken two river and one ocean cruise with Viking--I prefer to travel light, so I bring the Sony with the 16-70 and the 55-210. When we go ashore, I put one lens on and make do. What that approach very quickly led to was the 55-210 living in the cabin while the 16-70 and I whooped it up. I got great shots--Last week I posted two from Ljubljana, Slovenia--and feel the one lens is all I'll pack in the future.

Strapwise, compared to my Nikon D800E, the A6000 is so light it never occurred to me to buy a different strap. I have a Blackrapids strap for my Nikon and like it well enough, but so much of my shooting is done off of a tripod that I find it's a nuisance.

Camera Strap: Check out Peak Design. Versatile and easy to use straps that are easily changed. Available at B&H or possibly a store near you - they have a dealer finder on their website. I have both their neck strap and their hand strap. Both great. https://www.peakdesign.com/product/straps/

Best camera strap are all "nylon", forget leather. The strap should not be wider than 2". The hardware should be the ABS plastic type. The metal hardware "scratches" the camera bodies. They are inexpensive if you get the generic ones.
