Can anyone in a nutshell tell me the difference and/or which camera type one or the other belongs better with? I have D100, D200 and D810....

Thanks in advance, I'm still learning

FX lenses are designed for full sensor cameras, DX lenses are for crop sensor cameras. Check this out:

You would need full frame lenses for the D810, which is a very good camera. The D100 and D200 probably do not have autofocus motors in-camera, so they would also require lenses that would have autofocus motors in them. You can use your full frame lenses on them, but, for instance, you could not use a 50mm f1.8D lens because it does not have an autofocus motor. You would have to purchase the 50mm f1.8G lens to use on the D100 and D200. The D810, however, has an autofocus motor in-camera, so you could use lenses which do not have the AF motor. Also, you could also use dx lenses on the D100 and D200. While you could also use them on the D810, you could only do so in dx mode and you'd be losing the full capability of the full frame sensor.

Steve, the D100 and 200 both have autofocus motors in the body.

You may also use vintage fx film lenses. I have the D7000 and the crop factor is 1.5. I also have a D810 full frame. Those lenses work on it as well. There is a significant difference in cost. I recently purchased a vintage 500mm for under $400. A new lens is around $1300

Although FX Nikon bodies accept DX lenses in its crop DX setting you will be better served using the DX in one of your DX bodies like the D200.

Thanks for the correction. That does make it easier to buy lenses. I'm not sure how many full frame lenses come without a motor, but I do know that there are savings to be had when purchasing a 50mm f1.8 lens. The D version is much less expensive than the G version which comes with an AF motor.

Yep.
Some of the naming doesn't make sense, so don't assume.
The D3xxx, 5xxx and 7xxx are all DX.
Three digit cameras (D500, D810) are a mixed bag of DX and FX.
2 digit cameras (D40, D90) are DX.
Single digit could be either DX or FX depending on age.

The D100 was new in 2002, has a 6mp APS-C sensor and can use all AF lens back to 1977. The D200 was new in late 2005, has a 10mp APS-C sensor and is fully compatible with all AF lens and even old MF lens back to AI because it has an AI aperture ring. The D810 was new in mid 2016, is primarily an FX camera with a FF 36mp sensor, but will work with all DX lens in the current inventory and produces DX images up to 15mp. It will even color matrix meter with old AI lens. I'm not sure why you have the old D100 and D200 cameras but you will get much better images if you use the D810, no matter whether you use the FX or DX lenses. The dynamic range alone is worth it.

FX lenses are intended for use on FX or full frame cameras. They also work well on DX cameras. DX lenses "can" work on FX but generally have s small image circle that does not cover the full frame sensor. In general terms, using an FX lens on a DX camera will produce better image quality from corner to corner than a DX lens can. Using an FX lens on a DX camera will only use the center of the lens.

FX lenses are generally better on DX bodies, and can often be better than DX lenses as well.

But FX lenses generally perform as well or better on a DX camera.

From your link:

"The DX-format camera can use both types of lenses (DX and FX) since the non-DX lens image circle is larger than needed on a DX-format camera."

The only real downsides to do using FX on DX are weight, cost and size.
