As I said in another thread, I have grown weary of fighting the camera's meter, the number of ways that it can "get it wrong" and the number of convoluted workarounds it requires. I find manual exposure based on common sense and experience a lot less work and just as accurate. When in doubt, I also use an incident meter. And sometimes I just bracket.
If you find that your camera's meter is making your life difficult, try another approach.
Of course this does not mean that auto exposure has no place. I use aperture priority frequently when I know it's not going to lead me astray. It's just that I don't need it with sunny conditions and it does not work well with many other situations.
