Should you shut down your computer every night when your finished, or leave it on all the time. I've heard so many different answers..i'd love your opinion from you guys.

Mine is always on. However, once in a while the programs start to do strange things, or something doesn't seem to work any more.
To prevent that from happening, I reboot the computer once a week or so. Or if I forget, and something that worked 5 minutes ago, now doesn't, I reboot immediately.

If your main disk is SSD then leave it on for sure. If it's a normal HDD, opinions vary but I would leave it on.
If your computer is Windows and you want automatic updates from Microsoft then you have to leave it on. Opinions also vary as to the wisdom of letting Microsoft update your OS and software vs. being in full control. But for most users, automatic is best because many or even most of the updates are for security reasons.
If your computer is set to put the spinning disk to sleep and the monitor also sleeps then there is no reason to turn it off. Those settings are under Power Management in Windows.

Be sure to have battery backup and surge protection. Of course, laptops and notebooks have their own battery backup.

And yes, it will sometimes need to be re-started although usually won't require a full shut-off. That's sometimes needed but much rarer. Morning Star is quite correct and that last part of her advice is my "first rule of windows" when I teach computers to our senior citizens. Sometimes Microsoft's updates will cause changes that you can see. It's the price you pay so get over it.

I turn off mine once a week or when a storm with lightning passes by. Living in Florida, we get those storms a lot. My (PC) power options are set to turn off the display after 10 minutes and put the computer to sleep after 1 hour.

My Mac's, iPhone and iPad run 24x7 -

They will sleep after a period of no use of course, rebooting only when required after updates or when shut down by the UPS if there is a power failure

If I am to be away for more than a day or two I will shut my Mac's down till I return

My computer is never off. But the screen is shut down when not in use. As above I do reboot. I have the screen saver set for 30 min, after which the screen shuts off. I have no idea if this is the right way to do it, or even if there is a "right" way

I echo that. I have two desktop machines -- one that has been on continually for about ten years now and the other for around five. (I do not allow "sleep" nor "Hibernation" to engage -- I merely turn the monitor off or on as needed.) Neither show signs of distress caused by this behavior.

The Laptops are kind of different in that I simply close the lid which "pauses" everything allowing instant access when reopening the lid.

Not particularly Germaine to the issue but it should be mentioned that energy usage may be something to consider while decided which option -- off or on -- is best for one personally..

Further proof that I am a contrarian - I always turn my MacBook Pro off at night. It contains sensitive personal info that I would rather not have compromised. I still reboot it whenever it does not function as expected. In a similar fashion, my iPad Pro is off at night and is set not to "wake" unless I briefly ask it to during some period of nocturnal restlessness.

But you feel comfortable with that fear during the day when it is on? <grin>

I just "sleep" mine when not in use. I have a 860w power supply on my system and I don't like wasting electricity.
