Is there a practical and safe way to remove the tripod ring on the Nikon 200-500mm lens?

Check the manual. It’s user removeable.

It's called a collar, not a ring.

I put the tripod collar upside down and use it to carry my rig around. When I bring it up to shoot the collar is on top and out of the way allowing me to hold the lens with my left hand underneath the lens for easy handling.

This may be a stupid question but why do you want to remove the collar?

To lighten the lens weight by 10% (8 oz.)?

When I am shooting action, I do not use the tripod and it gets in my way and is uncomfortable to me.

I see, I did see a suggestion of rotating the mounting foot to the top and using it as a carry handle. but what the hell its your call, I was just curious, or nosy

That's exactly why I rotate mine so it's on top of the lens. Makes it really nice to carry around that way. When I go to shoot it's on top of the lens and does not get in the way when I shoot.

No wonder my photos were blurry. I called it a ring. Thanks for the helpful post.

It comes off too easily, that's one reason I replaced mine with a RRS (Ring like collar or is that a collar like ring?).
