Hand&Wrist, or Hand strap for Nikon D90

Have any of you had experience with a hand/wrist or just hand straps to hold a heavy camera, Nikon D90 with 55-300 lens. I so tired of the strap around my neck but I don't know if my hand (arm and shoulder) would take the constant weight of the camera. I would appreciate opinions.

Only you can decide. But that neck strap has got to go. They are terrible for anything that weighs more than a pound!

I use both types of straps depending on what I'm doing. For walking around I prefer an over-the-shoulder strap like Black Rapid or Carry Speed.

But when moving the camera between or off/on tripods or working a crowded room with an off axis flash, I like the additional security of a hand strap. I never let the camera hang from a hand strap, but rather use it just in case something or someone knocks the camera from my grip.

Usually a very heavy lens is a long telephoto lens which I try to keep on a tripod or monopod depending on where I am. And the camera has a hand strap attached (especially on the monopod).

Buy both from the same manufacturer and they are instantly interchangeable with the same camera mount. Very convenient. Carry Speed sells both as part of their package.

I hand-hold all of my field macro-photography. My macro set-up consists of a D90 or a D5000 with a Nikkor 105D & illumination. A heavier combination than with a 55-300 zoom. I comfortably carry my set-up, dangling at my side, for hours at a time.

AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR = 530 g/18.7 oz.
AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED = 750 g/26.5 oz.

I use a $25 Kalt L Grip Flash Bracket. You can see my set-up here:

Festina Lente, Carry Speed here I come. I thought I was just being wimpy when the neck strap bothered me. Thanks for your help.

Nikonian, OMG. I looked at your equipment. If I had outfits like that I'd need a push cart not straps of any kind. That circular flash is awesome. So is the milk carton diffuser. You're a practical techie!

Heavy loads on a neck strap can so easily lead to an MSI. I use a Nikon Hand Grip Strap-II AH-4. Its leather, comfortable, padded but not bulky. Comes with a tripod mount and its a quick switch to handheld. Google it and check it out.
