Nice to see so many musicians! I was an amateur classical (orchestra, opera, G&S) flutist for over 30 years. Now I play mostly Irish trad flute, old time fiddle, and make the occasional foray into contra or English Country Dance.

Cool. Are you aware are of bands like Yankee Ingenuity, Bare Necessities and so many more?

A quick show of hands please. How many photographers here are also musicians? I find it interesting that so many people who are "artistic" often are so in more than one discipline. Ansel Adams was also a classically trained pianist, you have Ralph Gibson, and more recently people like Brian Adams, Nikki Sixx (no joke!), and Graham Nash. All are well known musicians and are also Photogs. My father was a photographer and jazz drummer who must have rubbed off on me because I'm also a musician in addition to being a photographer. My eldest son, who plays multiple instruments, also has a keen eye for photography.
I'm sure that there have been many studies on this, but I'm just wondering how many in our little community practice both arts.

I play a mouth harp, but only by ear. I can't read a musical note for sour grapes.

Richard: Good to see your post. You definitely qualify as a musician/photographer, my friend.

I played the great Highland pipes for some years and actually piped at the wedding of my density's daughter many years ago. Photographing the wedding at all well would have been way beyond my pay grade. But, I could play the guests into the reception with "The Hielan Wedding" and "Scotland the Brave". Sadly, my piping days are long over. As a classical musician and professor, I still keep that up. And I do love to hear good piping.

Thanks for correcting. I was about to google density, thinking it might have a foreign or arcane meaning.

Played 12 string guitar in a folk group. We did Kingston Trio, PP&M, etc. At one point we played alternate nights with Jim Croce. He became famous, we did not. A lot of fun however, and a few extra bucks to boot!

I'm a keen social musician. I play fiddle, mandolin, guitar, double bass, and sing to distract from my playing. My working life has been as an artisan furniture maker and now keen amateur acoustic luthier. There was a 10 year period I made and sold EUBs while running my furniture business.

Similar to "jbump's" observation, as an engineer most of my career, I found a surprising number of musicians among the other engineers I worked with. These all happened to be the computer engineer sort, not the train type . . .

jbump mentioned healthcare workers as musicians, I trained as an engineer, ended up working in healthcare, and some of the finest musicians I have ever jammed with were healthcare workers. From a cardiologist classical guitarist to a guy in housekeeping who played a wicked blues harmonica, and everything in between. My Larrivee D-60 traditional dreadnought.

I've played drums in a number of bands. Have played in front of 20,000 people and love my photography & my motorbike(VTX 1800c). used to, in my younger days, work freelance for a Rock magazine & radio station taking photos of all different music genre stars. You have to go where the money is or where you get sent. I quite enjoy taking band photo's as well as getting into the venue for free.
