I have a Nikon D80 that I have had since 2006. I am going to upgrade to a D500 next year. I want to get a zoom lens that I can not only use on my D80 now, but one that I will be able to use on my 500. They both have the same sensor size, if that is the only determining factor, I am not sure. I want a zoom up to 600 anyway. I guess what I am asking is this," Is my D80 going to be capable of using any lens that my future D500 is?" This questions seems more stupid the more I try to explain it.-----but I am going with it. I would appreciate any advice or insight. I am anxious to get a great zoom lens. Thanks

Any F-mount zoom lens currently on the market will work with both your D80 and D500.

The D80 cannot meter with an older manual focus zoom lens whereas the D500 can. As for autofocus lenses, the AF lenses will work the same on either.

Get the Nikon D500 (or the D7500) and the Nikon 200-500 lens. It will not go to 600 mm but it will work on both of your cameras and with a 1.4 teleconverter you can go all the way to 700 mm with it. However it will probably work much better on the new camera as they focus faster and are a lot better in low light conditions.

Your D80 is not compatible with the new E lens.

This is something to watch out for. The oldest Nikon camera that can control the electronic aperture is the D7000. Check this Nikon article.

Get the Nikon 200-500 mm f5.6 lens. Then the D500 will make a great addition to the LENS.

AF-P lenses will work but won't be fully functional.

You can usually to go the Nikon Web Site and click on Lenses, it will let you put a in number of filters in to see what lenses are compatible, also the new AF-P lenses are not really recommended for older Nikons as there is limited functionality on those cameras.
