Hi guys & girls

I have my D500 arriving at the end of the week what lens can you guys recommend that are fast & sharp with good build quality.

What lens would you guys recommend I mainly shoot fast moving objects as I do dog training.
Currently I have the lens in the pictures, I mostly use the Nikor 70-300 on my Nikon D7000

Just check your current lenses on the new camera and do not think about more lenses unless you are not happy with the results from the current ones.

I have both of the cameras you have and the 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6. That's an excellent lens for the money. I have run into situations where its focusing couldn't keep up with fast moving subjects like birds in flight. I purchased the Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 after it. Its focusing motor is faster and has never had problems keeping up with fast moving subjects. Work with the lenses you have now. It seems like all of my lenses focus faster on my D500 than on my D7000.

Suggest you take a look at Thom Hogan's recommended lenses as a start.

Do you find 300mm on your 70-300mm good enough or do you wish you had more pulling power , if so I would get the 200-500mm nikon and sell the 70-300 vr you may get around $400 max for if but it will help with the new purchase, then you can work toward a good zoom
In the range to lowest to 200mm ,, then a wide angle , that should cover most , I very seldom use the 10-20mm , I should have just bought
A 36 mm or the Sigma 18-36mm rather than a wide angel

Any of the 70-200mm F2.8 lenses would yield much better results than what you are using now. Got a Pro body? Get a Pro lens for true Pro results, plain and simple.

I have a D500. A good walking-around lens is the 24-120. I am fortunate to have the new 70-200 f/2.8 FL lens and I think it is one of the best lenses Nikon makes. I tested the new 105 and it was excellent and the bokeh was over the top. All that said – you will really like the D500.

The first responder that said to test your current lenses gave very good advice. I also have dogs and attend various PD1 events/trials where the police dogs compete in agility, protection, and obedience. I shoot my D500 with either the Nikon 70-200 2.8 vrii or the Sigma Sport 150-600 depending on my vantage point. For an excellent walk around that is a bit more economical but every bit as sharp I have the sigma 50-100 1.8. A great lens and have the price of the others. I like the full frames though, as I use them on my other cameras as well.

Your 18-105 is a good all purpose lens for your D500.
What you are missing is a good macro lens. Nikon makes a 105mm Micro 2.8 pro lens which is excellent and reasonably priced. It will effectively be 150mm on your crop sensor body which is perfect. I have one and it doubles as a good portrait lens too.

Note: Nikon makes two 105mm lenses. Only one is a macro (micro).

If the 70-300 VR has served you well why get another lens? Fast means when referring to optics to those lenses with an aperture of f2.8 or faster. Do you need one of those?
My recommendation is that you keep using the 70-300 VR unless you need a faster lens.

But, keep this in mind, you can't use telextenders with that 70-300. Another purpose for fast apertures is to allow focusing for extenders.

People with suggestions mickymack is looking for good sports lenses I saw above 70-200 2.8 assuming you are referring to sports where you need some reach is an excellence choice

If you really want a new lens then test a Nikkor 300mm f4 PF VR: it is beautifully lightweight and produces excellent image quality. It may also be combined with the Nikkor TC14EIII.
