I recently purchased the AF Nikkor to use on my F4 body but cannot get the AF feature to work. The lens works fine with my D7000 but I really wanted to use it with the F4 & B&W film. The 50MM AF-S 1:1.8 works fine on the F4 so I'm wondering if I am missing something. Any and all thoughts appreciated.
Suggest you consult UHH member, "MT Shooter" who owns a camera store in Montana. MT uses Nikon gear, among other makes, and has substantial practical knowledge about Nikon compatibility issues. Should work. Perhaps the camera’s autofocus motor is malfunctioning. Do you have any other AF lenses to try?
Try cleaning the terminals on the rear of the lense -hope I'm correct!
also, I think the lense requires the AF-"D", to proprtly autofucus
Here's my WAG
'Old' Nikon lenses are somewhat compatible with 'new' Nikon cameras, but not the other way around. I think you'll need an 'older' lens to 'play well' with the older F4 camera.
I guess we have to keep searching, for the other AF lenses I have work fine, and this lens works fine on a D7000. It is an older lens, made in the 90's as I recall.

hmmmm. . . I"m clueless. good luck!
but, what I found on the net seems to show that the F4 is ca 1988, so your 'old' lens may not be quite 'old enough.'
I have Nikkor lenses from the 60's that I can get to work with every Nikon I have, this one is just a puzzle for it should work with the F4.
Anyone interested in a Nikkor - P 1:8 800MM? This was the lens that you saw at Cape Canaveral for the original Mercury missions, just shy of 32" long. It is a two piece lens, a focusing housing and then the lens. There was also a 600MM head but I've never come across one.

The AF Nikkor 70~210 1:4-5.6 was introduced in 1987. The D version appeared in 1993. All FX autofocus Nikkors except the G and E models are 100% compatible with the F4. As I suggested earlier, the autofocus motor may be malfunctioning. If you can, try another AF Nikkor, or have a repair technician check it.
Have you checked with Nikon; every once in a while a certain lens has exceptions.
Thank you all for your suggestions. I guess I'll just take a road trip up to Nikon Authorized Service
http://www.nikoncamerarepair.com/ and see what they have to say about it. While they do digital, they cannot be beat for what they can do with "F" cameras. Joe is the owner and from Japan as are all of the techs, they know the cameras inside and out.

BEST plan yet!
Please post the results, too.

I would add that if other AF Nikkors (without built-in focusing motors) work with your F4 then there may be something wrong with the focusing screw in the lens. That camera/lens combination should be fully compatible.

That is not true at all. The F4 is fully compatible with both versions of that lens, both 'D' and 'non-D'.
