This might have been on this forum before but I'm a newbee. What is the best way to delete pictures with out them multipling? I have hundreds clogging up my pictures folder and documents. I have read to do it in Safe Mode. Can you delete multiples? Thanks for any help you can give me on this.

There is no trick to deleting pictures...just select them, and hit "delete"...then they are gone.

You don't need to do it in safe mode.

It sounds like you have Windows. If you are duplicating them without trying, it sounds like your mouse is double clicking or your double click speed is set too fast. You can change that in the Control Panel.

You can delete multiple files. If they are together in the list, you can click on the first one then shift-click on the second one; everything in between will be selected. If they are not all together in the list, you can click on one, the control-click on each of the others. Each one you control-click on will be selected.

You can also use your cursor keys (arrow keys) to select a file. Holding down the Shift key while you move the arrow up or down will select the files.

After working on it off and on all day I got most of them licked. Some would not multiple delete. Had to delete some one at a time or six at a time. Thanks for your help. This is a great forum.

You can do it three ways:
1. select one and hit delete
2. select one then hold down the Ctrl key and use the mouse to add to the first selection then hit delete.
3. select the first one of a bunch in sequence that you want to delete and then hold the Shift key, select the last one in the group while you are still holding the shift key down, and the hit delete.

PS - if your Recycle Bin gets too full, it will really slow down your deletes especially in Light Room when deleting a lot at one time. You should empty it or increase it's capacity to keep your system up to speed.

Thanks Jeep Daddy. Maybe that's why I was having trouble multiple deleting because the recycle bin was too full.

Wait, this is PC. Mac seems to multiply my saved pics all over the place. Probably not to my savvy use of the application, but, because I don't understand the system. Whatever. I try to once in awhile delete/purge those known duplicates. It's probably because I don't have a clue what I'm doing and, being retired, don't take this seriously. Isn't there a delete key to make all those duplicates to go away????

What application are you using?

With my PC, when I hold down the ctrl key and click to select multiple pictures, it sometimes copies them. It used to drive me nuts until I figured out that I couldn't do it too quickly and periodically take my finger off the mouse.

In truth, doing a "clean" editing job and deleting poor pictures
is a hard thing for some folks to do at all.

Shift and click is select multiple, maybe holding down the control key is part of the problem you are having, I have never tried control click.... not sure what it does.

Holding down the control key lets you left click on and select multiple images, when they are highlighted, hit the delete key and they are gone to your recylce bin. Don't forget to empty your recycle bin once in a while too !!!l

Why delete - nowadays you get a terrabyte disk for peanuts. If the picture was worth taking there must be something there.

I needed a lion and it needed to be sharp - we do not have a lot here in Australia running around but I found on on a spare disk - cut it out using Gimp (not Photoshop - too expensive) - I put that lion in the landscape where the grass was the same sharpness as his coat. Nobody moaned about that and I did not have to go back to Africa that time so I can afford another lens

I may be riding a tap tap in Haiti and put my camera in burst mode, hold down the shutter for 10-12 images. Some may be out of focus, some may be half an image, some are just duplicates. I'll keep the best two or three and delete the unwanted ones.................
