My lovely 23 yr old daughter has developed a love for travel as well as a talent for photography well beyond my abilities, and I'm a bit jealous.
Her equipment is becoming more sophisticated and correspondingly expensive as well.
Combine that with my love of practical jokes (at her expense), I've developed a intricate & devious plan to absolutely devastate her and then gleefully surprise her at the same time. Please tell me what you think.

We have plans in place to go back to beautiful Iceland this summer for 2 weeks mainly to explore the various waterfalls and mountain peaks, photographing them in detail as we go.

Her birthday will fall during this time, and I plan on upgrading her equipment to a Nikon D810 as a surprise. Of course I will have brought it along, bragging that it is 'MY' new camera.

Now for the practical joke:

I plan to "borrow " her current Nikon D7200 body with the intent of photographing her, as we stand in a precarious position above a cliff , a waterfall or other similar location.

As she stands watching, I'll make a point to change out a lens on what she assumes is the current D7200, fumbling to the point were she sees me 'accidently' drop her camera body perhaps hundreds of feet down to the ground or into the water. I will of course have changed out the D7200 body with an old non-working D40 i just picked up off of EBay for a few bucks -having safely ensconced the D7200 in my bag.

Oh, the look of sheer horror i expect to see on that beautiful face.

Of course being the dutiful dad I am, I will immediately offer up 'my' brand new D810 and the corresponding lenses as a sacrifice for her loss ( which was really for her anyway). I'm just wondering at what point should I hand back the original D7200 and try not to laugh so hard?

Not a good idea, take her out to dinner before the trip and surprise her with a wonderful gift. Her joy and yours will be mutuali

Provided you have planned ahead for the eventuality of your daughter jumping after the D7200 in an effort to save it I would say OK. Make sure someone else is video taping the entire script. Then share it on Utube. You are BAD. I, as a father, salute you.

It would be nice to find a web site similar to this one but would not allow two bit crap like this to be posted. UH is getting worse by the day allowing anyone to post garbage like this only because they are making money on all the advertising jammed in our face.

Fortunately, Iceland enjoys a European-style health system so you won't be paying through the nose for the subsequent heart attack.
And eBay or not, someone is going to have to retrieve the stunt camera.

But if you pull it off, I'd like to see the 'face'.

"Am I bad?"
Maybe, maybe not - but that plan is a really bad idea.

First, you don't have to read it, second, you don't have to respond to it, and third, this post is much, much, much, much better than "the brown truck came today".

An image flashes through my mind (my daughter also loves her camera!) of this beautiful girl leaping after her beloved camera trying to save it!! Personally after thinking this I would NOT do that "joke!"

I wouldn't do that, and I wouldn't want someone to do that to me. Just give her the D810.

I love practical jokes, but that one seems a bit mean.
Maybe you could carry out the first part and let her think that you bought it for yourself and even torture her a little by letting her use is during your hikes and what not. Sometime later, present her with a beautifully wrapped gift of the empty camera box and the junk that comes with it. Should give everyone a good laugh when she realizes the camera is hers. Plus you wont have to carry the sacrificial camera around with you.
Just a suggestion
Have a good vacation and bring back some beautiful memories.

Well you do have an odd sense of humor
There has to be a way of doing that that won't render the d7100 useless always good to have a second body
And sounds like your gonna litter a perfectly good camera into a natural sounding
