Practical "jokes" that cause pain or consternation in any form should not be done. Better a loving surprise before you go so she can get used to the camera as previous suggested.
You are very bad!!!! I assume she has a set of full frame lens. Spend you time doing something positive.

I would never do that to my daughters. The love and satisfaction that I would get, would be to present the new camera to her before the trip. Not good!

I think the idea of gifting her a new camera is an absolute treasure. The rest of your plan sucks, big time.

In all honesty, you should give her the camera prior to leaving on the trip so she has a good chance to learn how to use it.

My lovely 23 yr old daughter has developed a love for travel as well as a talent for photography well beyond my abilities, and I'm a bit jealous.
Her equipment is becoming more sophisticated and correspondingly expensive as well.
Combine that with my love of practical jokes (at her expense), I've developed a intricate & devious plan to absolutely devastate her and then gleefully surprise her at the same time. Please tell me what you think.

We have plans in place to go back to beautiful Iceland this summer for 2 weeks mainly to explore the various waterfalls and mountain peaks, photographing them in detail as we go.

Her birthday will fall during this time, and I plan on upgrading her equipment to a Nikon D810 as a surprise. Of course I will have brought it along, bragging that it is 'MY' new camera.

Now for the practical joke:

I plan to "borrow " her current Nikon D7200 body with the intent of photographing her, as we stand in a precarious position above a cliff , a waterfall or other similar location.

As she stands watching, I'll make a point to change out a lens on what she assumes is the current D7200, fumbling to the point were she sees me 'accidently' drop her camera body perhaps hundreds of feet down to the ground or into the water. I will of course have changed out the D7200 body with an old non-working D40 i just picked up off of EBay for a few bucks -having safely ensconced the D7200 in my bag.

Oh, the look of sheer horror i expect to see on that beautiful face.

Of course being the dutiful dad I am, I will immediately offer up 'my' brand new D810 and the corresponding lenses as a sacrifice for her loss ( which was really for her anyway). I'm just wondering at what point should I hand back the original D7200 and try not to laugh so hard?

IMHO practical jokes have absolutely no value to anybody but the joker. I believe you would get value for EVERYBODY if you offer the new camera for her to try at the top of the cliff. If she likes it then present it to her.

An admitted Practical Joker! That says it all.

Now, I'm really glad not to know you.

Well medic24, after perusing you post again and reading this:

Sheer Horror, Dutiful Dad, Laugh so Hard.

Dunno what to say? You've already said it...

Well, if your looking to spoil the trip for her, and therefore you, go for it. If I were her, I would deny the gift after that stupid move.

Consider how you might feel if she reflexively grabs for it as it fall, loses her balance and falls after it. Perhaps to her death. Who has been 'pranked' in that scenario? Very bad idea!

Sounds like a lot of control issues going on here.

Make sure she's not carrying a gun or close enough to you to push you over the cliff.
I'm sure she has a sense of humor, otherwise you wouldn't be pranking her as often as you do.
Does she pull practical jokes on you? I'll bet she does.
I think some of the posters above are taking things too seriously. Have they never watched Candid Camera?
Have fun.

If I did that to my brother, he would promptly throw ME off the cliff. A person (playing the joke) would have to know the person well enough to know if it will work in the long term. I'd never do that to my brother, because of the (I'm sure) instant short term affects.
Whatever you decide, safe travels.

Don't. Practical jokes are not funny to the victim, and generally just cause embarrassment. She's your daughter, just give the camera.
