Marmare Falls near Terni in Umbria is the tallest and perhaps the oldest man-made waterfalls in the world. Dating back to 271 BC, the Romans diverted part of the river Velino to drain the malaria infested wetlands around the city of Rieti. The channel of water drops 541 feet over the natural cliff at Marmore into the Nera River below. This often caused flooding in the towns below the falls.
Water is normally channeled through a hydro-electric generating station resulting in a trickle of water over the falls. However, the water is diverted over the falls twice a day for a couple of hours resulting in a spectacular attraction.
The shot of the ancient villageof Papigno below the falls was carefully framed to omit the huge generating station surrounding the town.
Comments always appreciated.
