I like how this is developing. The idea of using a large soft box in the field for lighting is an excellent idea.
One thing I would like to learn more about is whether to change focal points by changing the focus on the lens versus moving the camera.

I've done both, but I found it easier to do the focus ring method if I was tethered and not working at higher magnifications. Higher magnifications require smaller adjustments which I think is easier with a rail

About using the focus ring versus moving the camera: I was wondering if there were differences in parallax shifts. I am speaking from zero experience, since I have never tried it.

On larger subjects, I find that I can use the focus ring successfully but when sub-millimeter changes are needed I use a focusing rail.

Focus ring if you are using a tripod with static subjects works well enough. But, all the stacking I have done is hand-held with the lens set to 1:1.
